Amazon Kindle for SA

Just checked - Picoult novels not available in the African store, only United States...

I am able to buy that one. It seems to think that I am in the United Kingdom, not that I care.

Other books like "Shantaram" do not even show up, though I know it is available to US buyers.

True, is available in the UK store but not in the Africa Store. The US store still has the widest variety though. You can "browse" any regional store but when you actually try and purchase the book then Amazon will check your IP to determine which region you are "really" from. That's where the VPN is needed.
And yip, Shantaram not available in the Africa or UK stores. It is in the US store though. As discussed in our PM - just use a US account :)

I know you mentioned using vouchers for books, but do you know for a fact that it will reject my credit card when making "US" purchases because the billing address is South African?

Honestly not sure if it will reject your SA card if you use it. Anyone else know if it does? Using the VPN is priority though...

Not sure if you guys have noticed - Kindle for PC (Beta) is finally available for download.
www.amazon.com/kindleforpc

thanks for that :)

Now I just need to figure out how to rip out the DRM so I can read it on my Sony Pocket Reader!

You might find this quite "enlightening". Think you will still need a Kindle linked to your account to actually download the Kindle file (.azw) to your computer.
I have tried it and it does work but there are a few "challenges". For example - I am reading "Eragon" on my Kindle at the moment - italics is used when Eragon and Saphira "talk" to each other. When I convert it with the above process and open the book in Stanza the italics formatting is discarded :( Still good to know that it is possible
If you using a Sony reader then why not just download from the Sony store?

P.S. I see you live in Durban North - I used to live there too. Actually finished school there

ah, thanks for the link. You can download the .azw files using the new PC reader beta. But I'm not sure where to find the serial number in the PC reader yet. Havn't had a look yet.

The sony store does not seem to have as many books as amazon...

I'm sure someone will (hopefully soon) post a guide online on how to get your serial number from the PC app. Will keep an eye open for it ;)
The Amazon store is pretty awesome :D

I love Amazon. I work with them as an associate, but I never liked the look of the Kindle, nor the fact that they weren't going international. I was overjoyed when Sony released their Pocket Edition Reader, it looked so elegant, and I liked the feature list, and the cheaper price. I imported one straight away! It's absolutely beautiful - I love it! I installed the software and then realised the ebook store only caters to the USA!! WOOPS! thank goodness I do business in the states and have a card issued by a US bank. And then it wasn't even two months and Amazon announced their international kindle!!!!!!!!!!!!! ****! always happens. Anyway I'm really happy with the Sony, but I still want access to the entire Amazon range. It never crossed my mind that a specific device might offer more books....

PS: the only thing I don't like about the Sony is that my sweaty fingers leave marks on the sexy brushed metal case! I'm forever polishing it haha
As you said, it won't be long before a guide appears :)

Ha ha - nice ;)
Had a look at the Sony - it does look pretty schweet, but I prefered the look of the Kindle for some reason. Probably personal preference. The Nook looks pretty cool too - before I bought my Kindle I considered waiting for the Nook but decided to go with the Kindle. Honestly, VERY happy with it and think I made the right decision :)

I finally built up the courage to buy a Kindle Intl. for my fiancee.

I expect Amazon to throw it back in my face this afternoon though. I created my fiancee a new account and set her location to the USA (using a friend's address in New York). I then had it shipped to that friend (he'll bring it with next month), and paid with my South African card. Surprisingly, everything went through but I imagine when they wake up State-side, some "real person" will take one look at the transaction and cancel it. My card hasn't been billed yet.

Fingers crossed!

You guys certainly do things the hard way.
Just download pirated books and put it on your cellphone.
OR buy them through Mobipocket reader (for your cellphone) if you don't want to pirate the books.

The EASY way...

If you think that reading books on your cellphone is the "same thing", then you've missed the point of eBooks completely.

I don't think they'll have a problem with that. Should go through :)

Don't like "pirated" books! If everyone had to download pirated books then stores like Amazon would have to up their security and DRM even more. Only hurts the availability of e-books in the future. Authors will also turn against e-books and make sure their books are not converted into e-books (like John Grisham). If we all just paid for books then authors would embrace the new technology and it would probably become even cheaper in the long run.
Paying $10 for a new book is really not that expensive! If you have to "steal" instead of paying a measly $10 then I think you need to have your priorities checked - maybe check them whilst you steal your next TV or SLK Merc?

Totally agree!!! There is a reason e-readers using an e-ink display and not a LCD/LED display. Reading on a proper e-reader is basically the same as reading a printed page :D Soooooo much better than a cellphone or computer screen!!

Yeah. I get it.

Kindle advantages:
- e-ink
- eliminates the need for carrying around actual books
- access to purchase ebooks (which as far as I know is not possible in SA for other mediums such as reading on your laptop or the cellphone)

Disadvantges:
- large price tag
- it's an electronic device ie. it will probably break in less than 2 years or be replaced by a newer, perhaps cheaper model, whereas, people upgrade their cellphones on a regular basis
- it’s still a single-purpose machine, unless the internet on it is free

On a personal note, if a person really enjoys a book they have read - borrowed or electronically(even partially) - they will want to buy their own copy. And the actual book can be kept and shared with friends and family.

i still have my rosy amazon colored glasses on :)

and any minute now my credit-card is gonna put its one on too and my baby will arrive! :)
