Is it available in SA anywhere yet?

I want to upgrade my 5850 before the BF4 launch and the new R9 series seem to be much better value compared to the current range ...

It won't be available in SA yet when its not even available overseas before 31st October...

Thought I saw it being released 3 Oct. On phone, will get the article tomorrow.

Nah, NDA on reviews only expires in 2-3 days or so, most info I've seen points to a 15Oct release in the US so far.

the R9290x will be around 9k+ it seems just putting it out there, my buddy getting a pair he said.

The R9280x is just 7970 GE , not even the device id changed , you could just install R9280x bios on 7970 GE will work fine.

I have a 1st gen i5 750 with 6 GB RAM and a 5850. All from about three years ago. Recently added a SSD. Running at 1360x768 on a 32".

Checked last night and the four CPU cores are running around 90%, RAM usage around 4 GB and FRAPS around 30-40 fps on Auto (high). On Ultra 20 fps at best.

So I guess I really need a total replacement not just a graphics card. :(

You can easily overclock that CPU, but I won't recommend that on a stock CPU cooler.

On that ultra-low resolution of 1366x768, a better graphics card would have a minimal impact, and instead the CPU makes all the difference.
You lose out on all the nice game details when you don't play on a high resolution!

I've also got a 20" 1600x900. Think I should give that a try? I also have a 46" 1920x1080 but that isn't going to work I am sure!

I have a i5 760 and HD6870, and my CPU bottlenecks my GPU.

Battlefield 4 is very CPU intensive, I recommend you consider upgrading/overclocking your CPU.

I have overclocked my i5 760 2.8GHz to 3.4GHz and it makes a noticeable difference while playing Battlefield 4.

Also update your graphics drivers to 13.9, I personally tried 13.10Beta and it actually made things worse for me.

A quick calc on a new PC (dealer ex VAT), keeping the case, PSU, SSD, DVD, LCD (1600x900), keyboard, mouse:

i7 = 3000
8 GB RAM = 900
Mobo = 1200
GPU 7870 = 2500

Total = 7600 + VAT = 8700

Meh ... might as well replace it all and sell the old one.

Why do you want a i7? do you do a lot of video converting/editing? i7 only has hyperthreading over a i5, isn't worth it if you are just going to use the CPU to game.

Personally I would get the best i5 and then use the cash saved from not getting the i7 to get a better GPU.

That wont boost anything assuming the BIOS is compatible, the 7970 isn't manufactured with the new GCN architecture and therefore wont be able to leverage to the fullest extent of the new Mantle API that AMD is releasing. Furthermorethe 7970 can't natively support 60fps on multi 4k monitor setups.

Busy building my new PC bit by bit as budget allows. This month was going to be the Graphics card purchase month. Was going for 7850, but will rather wait for the R9 range and get the 270x.

7970 is based on GCN and will support mantle as well just like the R9 280X. Not even the new R9 290x can handle 60fps at 4k res

Well iirc, the new 280x has a change in the underlying architecture for GCN. If there isn't one, then I probably mixed up GCN with an updated tressfx. The 280x is supposedly coming out with HDMI 2.0, which allows for 60 fps on 4k screens.

the last/current gen of consoles really hurt PC gamers in that monitors for some reason stuck at 1080p which led to little innovation as far as resolution support

Nope still HDMI 1.4a

Review for the MSI R9 280x

Exactly the same as 7970 ghz edition with slightly reduced clocks and power consumption. So all GCN series cards are ready for mantle which I think was a good idea for AMD to do.

Just hoping BF4 with Mantle makes it worthwhile

I flashed my 7970 with R9 280x bios , card boots and reports the new clocks , but bf4 crashes after a while , will wait for more bios to come available to flash with :p
