It looks like AMD's RX 7900 XTX may have a lot of overclocking potential

AMD's Radeon RX 7000 series has now been revealed, and their flagship-level Navi 31 graphics cards boast some impressive specifications. That said, AMD's GPU clock speeds were lower than many expected, with AMD's RX 7900 XTX having a Game Clock of 2300 MHz and a boost clock of 2500 MHz.

In a video from PC World, it was said that AMD's Navi 31 silicon was "designed to scale to up to 3 GHz", suggesting that AMD's RDNA 3 graphics cards may have some untapped overclocking potential. With AMD focusing on power efficiency with their latest graphics cards, it looks like Radeon has targeted an optimal part of their GPU's voltage/frequency curve, potentially leaving room for beefy GPU overclocks. However, it is worth noting that these "up to 3 GHz" claims do not come from AMD directly.

With a power target of 355 watts, AMD's Radeon RX 7900 XTX consumes a lot less power than Nvidia's RTX 4090 graphics card, and ASUS has already revealed an RTX 7900 XTX model that has three 8-pin PCIe power inputs, giving the GPU access to 450 watts of power though those connections. Potentially, this power could be used to deliver higher clock speeds and increased gaming performance, though this remains to be seen.

say AIB partners can scale the GPU up to 3 GHz, how much more will they charge? The power limits would need to be increased, and so will the cooling need to be more adequate hence the BOM will also go up.

The ASUS GeForce RTX 4090 Strix 4090 OC is $1,999. Will we then see an ASUS Radeon RX 7900 XTX OC at +$1,499?

Anyhow, it is worthwhile to listen to the video I posted above. Lol, 'insiders' thinking that they can persuade AMD to drop the XT's price by $100. At that rate AMD would need to move their remaining RX 6000 series supply at $500 and below when the RX 7700 is launched.

JUST FOR FUN: Did some number crunching and based on aggregate review results from techpowerup and others the 7900XTX is only about 6.6% slower than the 4090 in raster - based on AMD's own claims. (there's a lot of possible variance in testing ofc, wait for actual reviews)

What nobody is mentioning is that AMD's slides showed "up to" where existing benchmarks are averages.
 
Listening to PCWorld speaking to AMD now,


so the reason why FSR 3.0 is not ready now is that AMD made a 'promise' that it must work on all RNDA generations. The speculation that AI is needed to power FSR 3.0 is not then true, but I have a suspicion that FSR 3.0 might be rushed to the oven to compete with DLSS 3.0.

I am also a bit nitpicky on the details because the last thing I want is this to be another Vega launch. Saying this, I do have a Vega GPU.

The 8K thing… that is AMD selling people a dream, it is a story to tell. The likely 8K use case, well, that will be rare, and the reported rates can only be experienced with intense up scaling. The up scaling better not diminish raw 8K.

All which has Steve's attention now is the thermal sensors.

Anyhow, I am more interested in the mid-tier, so I will be looking at the 7700-7800 GPUs. Nvidia would need to lower their top end pricing to better plan their mid-tier placements, and this will depend on how well the 7900 XT/XTX compares to the 4080. I hope that the reviews aren’t "up to" Vega BS.

I see some 'insiders' at the AMD show in Las Vegas believe that the RX 7700 XT will be priced $500. In today's time considering market conditions that is not bad. A 7700 could be $450 with the 7600 XT and 7600 occupying the $350 and $300 brackets respectively. The 6500 should then be $200.

Intel is in a very bad place. Nvidia has already shipped ~100 000 4090 GPUs with many more shipments to come. They succeeded in their launch. How they will go about their pricing matrix now, well that depends on how the 4080 measures up to AMD’s latest and greatest.
 
Poll should have an other option. I have used both nvidia and amd over the years, always go for the best option at the time irrespective of brand.

Will have to see if any of these rdna cards will be worth an upgrade over my current 3080.

That is the whole point. I made the post to test sentiment. No matter in which community you are, AMD has always led with the most vocal support, yet, when you look at sales it is Nvidia which occupy the tiers. This being the odd case since AMD has consistently had the better value proposition since their RX 5000 series.

I got prickled by curiosity and AMD with their RX 6000 series launch compared their RX 6800 to the RTX 2080 Ti and their RX 6800 XT to the RTX 3080. Why not compare to the RTX 3090 Ti then?
 
So overall the situation is as it says for current features like ray tracing and DLSS AMD is slightly behind but raw performance team red is clearly ahead especially due to the software improvements. Lets wait for the team red to release its actual benchmarks to see how good they get.

I see the reviewers have received their samples, or at least today is the showcase day. This is good news because Nvidia hardly gave the reviewers time to review the 4090.

December 13th is the scheduled release date. That will allow reviewers 5 days to review the two GPUs to provide proper and more in-depth reviews. I won't trust the current leaks since it is riding on Vulkan-hype.
