hi there

i am wondering whether to go for the Intel i5 760 or the AMD Phenom II x6 1055t.

compared to what i am using at the moment, either of them would be a significant upgrade.

which of them would be better for games?

the i5 is faster at the moment for games, but what about in a few years? i am aiming to keep the upgrade for atleast 3 years

i can't play games very well on consoles. i've tried it, and i just can't. the only success i had was in Left 4 Dead 2 with a melee weapon, and even then i needed a lot of med pacs... anyway, back to topic. AMD or Intel?

Take what does the job best for your requirements. Currently both my boxes is intel tech, and when I upgrade they will still be intel tech. Nvidia is my preference over ATI.

Yes l4dx is hard on the console I'd rather play that on my pc than on my x360...

Both will be fine with games. Just get a good combination with your motherboard, graphic card and ram.

for the RAM, would 8gb Patriot G2 1600mHz do?

and for graphics, would the Asus 6870 do?

i don't want bottlenecks, except for the HDD. i just don't have the cash for a SSD right now.

Buying a last-generation i5 now is a terrible idea, especially if you want it to last a while. Get a Sandy Bridge setup instead. I can't believe no-one said this yet.

sandy-bridge is just too expensive right now. i'm still in high school, so the budget is a bit tight. at the most, i can spend R2500 on motherboard, RAM and CPU

Well, the i5 760 costs R1800 already, how will you get a motherboard and RAM for R700?

true that... apologies, thought it was a bit cheaper than that...

right, change in plan.

intel is now out of the contest completely, just too expensive.

should i get an AMD 1055t or a 955BE? both are about the same price, between R1200 and R1300

RAM - I don't know Patriot, I usually go with Corsair. Buy from Frontosa. It's on the cheap-end side and gives great latency for gaming. Get two 4GB and try to run them in dual channel, should give you more bus speed than the CPU.
Graphics should be fine, try to get a 1GB, at least.

Why go Intel i5 750. Rather go for i5-2500k or so much better. AMD will always loose and they given up. They said they will no longer compare with Intel.

The i5 750 is outdated and discontinued.

(1) no motherboard specified, (2) laptop RAM won't work on a desktop motherboard

@grandmasterfuz:
What do you have for a graphics card, PSU, hard drive and case?

Since you're on a budget, there is no point in getting expensive DDR3 1600MHz RAM.

Here's my suggestion:
CPU: Intel Core i5 2300: http://rebeltech.co.za/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=251_252_255&products_id=5699 @ ~R1500 * Out of stock
RAM: 1x 4GB Transcend DDR3 1333MHz CL9 1.5V: http://rebeltech.co.za/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=3_4_10&products_id=6916 @ ~R180
Motherboard: ECS H67H2-M2: http://rebeltech.co.za/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=25_31_259&products_id=7865 @~R670 * Out of stock
Total (incl shipping & VAT): ~R2500

I would actually suggest that you rather wait till like 3rd of January, because some of the suppliers & online PC shops are already closed.

ok, looks like i can stretch my budget a bit. R3000 is now the max. for that amount i need: CPU, RAM, Motherboard

My current rig is:

CPU: AMD Athlon 64 x2 6000+ Brisbane
MB: MSI K9A2GM-FIH
RAM: Adata 2GB DDR2 800
GPU: ATI 5750 1gb
HDD: Seagate 2TB Barracuda Green
PSU: Omega MG-500W.

so really, any mid-range setup will be a major improvement.

this upgrade isn't urgent, i just think its time to move on a bit :p

+1

OP, put more money into graphics card than CPU. Entry i5 quad is more than enough for gaming. HD6870 is good, but HD6950 is a lot better if you can afford it.
