I am considering signing up with Amobia (with their wireless uncapped offering) and was hoping to get some customer reviews (speed tests \ latency \ customer service).

I read on the forums that somone was gaming (Xbox Live) using this connection - anyone have input on this?

Thanks!

We use them for business at a number of clients and are happy with the service. Rouxenator has used their consumer services for a while and recently upgraded to uncapped. He might have more insight to offer.

Yeah, me and Roux upgraded to uncapped and been testing it. The capped unshaped service is great for games while the uncapped shaped is good for games but better for browsing / dl so far.

On local I have the same latencies to servers as on the capped unshaped service which is about 40ms. The unshaped service had a ping of 180 international but now the uncapped has 300 odd... at least I don't play pvp games on international so it is still great.

As for customer service, they don't have service after 17:00 and nothing over weekends so it does tend to get frustrating when your link goes tits up after hours... but then again during office hours they deliver some of the best service I've experienced in S.A. :)

Depends on what Amobia you are talking about. The one in Potchefstroom is a bunch of hooligans who don't know what they are doing. So if you live here stay away, I have been struggling with them for two years.

They don't have a thing called customer support, and they sure as hell don't give you stable internet

I'm with them in Somerset West and its been excellent.

Was on the unshapped account for about 6months, and was really good, local ping was about 80 max, and some international servers it was 200.

Now I am on the uncapped account which runs through mwebs network, so you get the same a everyone else in this respect, but yes international ping is now 300+:( but local is the same.

Its because the unshapped capped account uses SAIX bandwidth, (SAT3) while the uncapped shapped account uses mweb (SEACOM)

I did eventually sign up with Amobia. 2 mbps uncapped shaped - R 650 per month (Area: Midrand Cost: R2000 device+installation fee + R700 for complex install)

My antenna and PoE device was installed early May. Their service thus far has been excellent.

Some information which might be useful to others:

1. They dont pro rata the first month - so if you install in the middle\end of the month, you are still billed the entire amount.

2. They email your usage on a daily basis, with a fair usage policy of 7 GB 3 day rolling window (this means you can download ~ 70Gb per month and still be within their usage policy)
I have gone over this usage (~10 GB), without any issues\throttling from them.

3. They were kind enough to open up certain ports so i could get an Open NAT for Xbox Live. I havent noticed any lag when playing COD4 MW2, nor have the other players complained about me lagging from their perspective.

4. I have used Skype (without any issues) to chat to my buddies locally, but as mentioned in previous posts, the local ping is the same for capped and uncapped options.

5. I dont use torrents (prefer AstraWeb) so I cannot comment on shaping with regards to the torrent ports.

6. Download speeds have been consistent both during the day & night - I get ~ 240 KB\s which is close to the theoretical maximum of 256 KB\s (2 Mbps).

My experience thus far been great, and would recommend them to anyone who cannot get an ADSL line.

In addition to the above post I think Amobia are really missing a trick by not offering a 'cocktail' service i.e. allow the users to have an option to switch between uncapped shaped (for normal http downloads) and capped unshaped (for P2P \ Gaming). Switching to betweeen uncapped shaped and capped unshaped only when required would be a gr8 product offering.

I moved away from Amobia uncapped in Cape Town as it is terrible at the moment. I am back on 2mbps but for the last two weeks I have never reached speeds in excess of 0.20mbps :(

What will be cool is if ANY WISP can provide SEMI-shaped service!! Shaped during office hours and at 17:00 or 18:00 switch to unshaped! that would be ideal for my home/office use!

I have ordered ADSL.. I am having too many problems with my amobia connection. Telkom service seems to be better, they don't lie say they don't know when they will be installing, they just say that it will take longer than the "normal" 21 days. I mean, its gonna cost me R1000 for the connection of a cable already in my house and switching it to ADSL which is gonna take two hours max. This means that the rate for a Telkom [-]noob[/-] technician is twice that of what I charge for programming per hour... guess software development is the wrong industry :/

I literally just ordered a site survey and chatted to their sales. I asked them about gaming on their uncapped 2mb/s - and she said that they could work something out between switching from capped to uncapped, which is awesome - just depends on the cost though I guess. I will post what happens here.

after waiting for days for the installer i finally got my connection and i have to say so far i am really happy just hope everything stays the way it is.

using that to play games via xbox live and it's stable as hell and it's an 3mb uncapped under amobia

Hope you read the fine-print mate - I do believe there is a rolling cap???

Amobia & aerosat not in bed together now?
If they were ok, They will only get worse now.

I'm also considering Amobia... I've grown super tired of Telkom so I've requested a site survey. I hope everything goes smoothly and timeously.
