ANC bash: 3 held over green laser light

hmm, so now, if i had a 500mw pointer & someone broke into my home & I managed to get the fvcker in the eyes it should stop him ?
any theories on this...

It probably would but then again a large wet fish in the eyes would also stop someone. Anything is possible but is it the best practical solution? I don't think so.

Get a pepper spray gun and shoot the bugger in the face with that.

So were these guys arrested because the green laser light was a real threat, or because this was the ANC bash?

This reminds me of the spilling the drink near Zuma Assault charge.

There were lots of journalists around looking for stories, just because other instances dont get reported doesn't mean it doesn't happen.

Also don't see what this has to do with the ANC, if you point a laser at any aircraft pretty much anywhere in the world you are in for a world of hurt. It's a stupid thing to do due to the potential for causing an accident. These guys guys should be held to account for being id10ts

It doesnt need to take a direct sustained flash to distract someone. Just a flash directly to the eyes is enough to distract someone who potentially has a second to react. This distraction at the wrong time during a landing or take off can kill.

I took part in a driving test once where they were testing peripheral vision, just a side on headlight at the wrong time has been proven to distract u long enough to potentially jump a stop or red light. Will look for link to lit when I have some time

It's not only the direct hit to the eyes, when the laser hits the polycorbonate windshield of a plane/helicopter it causes it to "green" over. Trying to find the link where I read it. Here is one link with what the pilot sees, http://www.pangolin.com/resguide09c.htm

This 14-second animation shows the three visual effects that concern experts: distraction (dimmest), glare (medium) and temporary flashblindness (brightest, with fading afterimage). The animation demonstrates how an airplane laser exposure is almost always a flash, not a steady bright light.

Im in aviation, they should be castrated and then shot. Distracting a pilot during one of the critical phases of flight...that is just so...so...so STUPID.

That's the image I was thinking about earlier.

Can you believe there are people in the thread defending the behaviour? :erm:

People are defending it as it allows them to bash the ANC. Pathetic really, as they willfully ignore how dangerous this is.

I can understand it from a protective safety point of view... but the likelihood of anyone actually being able to hold the thing still enough for long enough straight into someone's eyes in an aircraft flying hudreds of meters or even kilometers away is extremely remote.

I therefore see it as more of a public safety training kind of thing.
Anyway, we will see what comes of the court case.
Whether they can actually look at the scientific evidence, or whether the ANC steps in to make a political case out of it.

Who exactly was defending it?

You, kind of.

Who exactly was defending it?

You were assuming they were arrested because there was ANC event going on and not understanding the seriousness of their actions. They deserved to be arrested for doing this under any circumstances.

Oh, I fully understand that it is serious, and an arrest worthy action.
What I dispute is it's capability to actually bring down a plane.
Can you provide an example or any proof where this kind of action has successfully caused a plane crash?

Give a 14 year old a laser and he will point it at averything... especially planes.
The publicity on this is a good thing for awareness, but I hope the kids don`t get a criminal record for this.
