TomTom revamps navigation app with offline maps in CarPlay

Last year Apple opened its CarPlay feature up to third-party navigation apps including Google Maps and Waze. Now TomTom has overhauled its iPhone navigation map with CarPlay support including offline maps.

TomTom GO Navigation for iPhone is out this month with improved lane guidance, downloadable maps for navigating without relying on cellular data, and CarPlay support for car receivers that work with Apple’s infotainment feature.

The CarPlay experience includes access to ‘My Places’ locations saved on TomTom’s navigation service, making the TomTom experience easily accessible in any car with CarPlay.

TomTom GO Navigation is powered by the company’s freshest maps so drivers can steer clear of blocked roads. It’s the first app with offline maps that can update smaller map attributes like speed limits, road directions and road blocks on a weekly basis. In addition, TomTom offers Maps à la carte, allowing users to add and delete map regions based on their personal driving needs. Maps can be downloaded on a country or regional level based on individual needs, limiting the amount of phone memory used.​

TomTom Go Navigation Updated With Apple CarPlay Support

There’s a new navigation option for anyone using an Apple CarPlay system in their vehicle. The TomTom Go Navigation now support.

A great feature of the app is offline maps so you won’t have to battle a data limit. The office maps can also update smaller attributes like speed limits, road directions, and road blocks each week.

Maps can also be downloaded à la carte depending on your location to save space on your iPhone.

BMW makes Apple CarPlay a subscription service

Industry first sees BMW charge £85 a year for Apple CarPlay - though a lifetime subscription can be had for £295

BMW has become the first carmaker to make Apple CarPlay a subscription service, with owners wanting to synchronise their iPhone with their car’s infotainment system having to pay £85 a year in order to do so.

The move applies to all new BMWs with the latest 7.0 operating system, first seen on the BMW X5 launched in 2018.

All new BMWs with 7.0 now come with a year’s free CarPlay subscription, but after the first 12 months owners will have to decide whether to allow the subscription to lapse, or pay to continue to access it. If they choose the latter option the firm offers a month’s trial for £1, or owners can pay £85 for a full year, £255 for three years, or £295 for lifetime access to the service.

BMW Wants You to Pay an Annual Fee to Access Apple CarPlay

From the 2019 model year onward any new BMW sold will require the owner to pay an $80 annual fee in order to connect their Apple iTelephone device to their premium luxury automobile. Where most automakers include the connectivity in most products, occasionally reserved for higher trim models, BMW will charge an additional access. The audacity!

On top of the incredibly high monthly note for your new car, and the incredibly high service charge for your iPhone, now you’ll need to pay extra if you want the two high-tech machines to interface. I knew things were looking dire in the automobile industry, but is picking nits over $6.70-ish per month going to make or break BMW?

BMW models equipped with navigation will have the option to pony up for the service. You can pay a lump sum when you get the car, which amounts to 20 years of Apple CarPlay connectivity for $300, or you’re stuck paying $80 per year for the time you own the car. The first year of CarPlay use is included free of charge, how generous.

Android Auto updated with new launcher, auto resume, missed notifications, and assistant badges

Today, Google released a blog post outlining a bunch of new changes coming to vehicles with official Android Auto support.

To start, there’s a new app launcher. It is streamlined with more apps are visible at once. The most frequently used apps can be found at the top row. In addition, new Google Assistant badges will give you pertinent information on your calendar or news, for instance, without having to take your eyes off the road.

Once connected to Android Auto, your device could now automatically resume whichever song or podcast was being played earlier. The app must be compatible with Android Auto.

If you have previously asked Google about a destination, it will automatically populate the maps application and start navigating automatically as soon as you are connected.

I had the pleasure of trying the new Android Auto this morning.I like the new design with all the compatible apps on the screen.On the previous design useful info like ETA,weather and recent calls was always on the screen and now this is not there,to get this info you need to kind of launch the necessary app, which is a bit annoying.I think it will take some getting used to.Overall the new UI is pretty awesome,completly different.

Owners are now seeing the message: “Your free trial of Apple CarPlay is up. Would you like to renew? Please pay £85 for another year.”

We’re used to automakers bundling in free infotainment features such as CarPlay and Android Auto, both of which migrate functions from your phone to the car’s multimedia system, but manufacturers are now starting to ask customers to pay for the services.

It’s the start of a revolution called ‘features over the air’, which offers the ability to continually upgrade cars remotely with both useful and frivolous software functions.

CarPlay is not free. Apple charges car makers £45 to £90 per car to use it. Then it has to be integrated into the screen, which incurs further costs, all of which are factored into the list or lease price.

BMW owners now have to choose whether or not to pay for it to continue being a feature of their car, alongside add-ons such as a digital ‘key’ for up to five phones.

Has anyone got the bluetooth forgetting issue?
If I pair my phone to the radio, it works fine, just for music and calls.
If I then connect the phone via usb and connect AA, it works fine, however upon disconnection (when turning off the car) it forgets the bluetooth connection.

So the next time I enter the car I have to repair if I want to use the phone without AA.
When not paired and connecting the cable with AA it automatically pairs the bluetooth as well for calls during that AA session, it forgets again after the car is turned off.

What brand/model car (or head unit if it's aftermarket)? Can't say I've noticed any such issues.
 
Samsung s7, LG g6, Blackberry key2, all running stock Roms Android 8.1.
Xiaomi Note 4, running Lineage OS Rom.

Tested on 2 different cars (Same model)

Polo vivo 2019.

So basically because of BMW, no other reason.

It’s stupid.

I paid for the car, they need to factor it into the price not attach silly subscriptions.
