I don’t understand why these companies are only rolling out testing now at GM release.

Surely the Beta testing should have been like a month ago already?
 
Google Maps for CarPlay in iOS 12 is now available

Google Maps for CarPlay in iOS 12 is now available with version 5.0 out now on the App Store. Apple released iOS 12 just yesterday which enables third party maps apps to offer their own mapping data for CarPlay.

Google-owned Waze is also bringing CarPlay support in an upcoming update. Prior to today, Apple’s infotainment feature only supported Apple Maps when viewing mapping data from the iPhone on the built-in screen in newer cars.

Google Maps on CarPlay lacks voice control with Siri, but within the Google Maps app is Google-powered voice search. The navigation app also works with your Google account so you can have saved addresses like work and home.

For drivers, most importantly, Google Maps for CarPlay gives iPhone users the option to safely use Google’s navigation app in the car if Apple Maps doesn’t provide the best data for a given location. Customers now have choice with mapping data when using CarPlay which is great to see.

CarPlay users will need to run iOS 12 for iPhone and update to the latest version of Google Maps to use the new CarPlay app. Google Maps is available for free on the App Store.

Google Assistant arrives on Android Auto

Google has just announced that Assistant is finally available for Android Auto. It will appear both on the app and on supported cars and will be activated with the “OK Google” command.

Google Assistant will support plenty of commands while you are driving. You can navigate to specific points of interest, and you might use both Google Maps and Waze, according to your preferences. The usual questions “what’s on my calendar” or “call John” or “remind me to arrange dinner plans” are also supported.

Google Assistant will work with follow-up questions similar to how it's performing on a mobile device. You can ask if a particular store is open and later to ask for directions. You can also play music, listen to the news, turn on/off Bluetooth, etc. Although Google Assistant has a typing feature on smartphones, it lacks from Android Auto in order to keep your hands on the steering wheel.

Although Android Auto is available in over 30 countries, Google Assistant is initially launching to seven countries, including Australia, France, Germany, United Kingdom, United States.

How to "replace" Apple Maps with Google Maps on CarPlay

In the four years since CarPlay debuted, Apple Maps has been the only option for navigation. Today, the long-awaited support for Google Maps has officially arrived. Follow along for how to replace Apple Maps with Google Maps on CarPlay.

While Apple Maps has made some solid improvements over the years and has a big overhaul in the works, Google Maps still has a sizable lead as the most popular navigation app. Even for those who usually prefer to stick with Apple’s native apps, having Google Maps as a CarPlay option is a very welcome addition.

How to replace Apple Maps with Google Maps on CarPlay

1) Make sure you’re running iOS 12 on your iPhone and Google Maps version 5.0 or higher
2) Open Settings
3) Tap General then CarPlay
4) Choose your vehicle
4) Swipe to the second page of apps, tap and hold on Google Maps, and move it to the Home screen

Here’s how the process looks:

After choosing your vehicle you can move Apple Maps to the second page of apps if you’d like. Then swipe over to see Google Maps as an option, tap, hold and slide it to the Home screen as shown below.

CarPlay will offer Waze as another navigation option, but it is still limited to a limited TestFlight private beta for now.

Latest Apple Music for Android update brings Android Auto support, lyric search, more

After rolling out beta support to users last month, Apple Music for Android has today been updated with support for Android Auto. The update also brings lyric search, redesigned artist pages, and more. These features were all tested last month through the private Apple Music beta for Android.

With Android Auto support, Apple Music users can now control audio playback through their car’s infotainment system, including changing tracks, navigating through playlists, and more. The feature works much like it does with other audio apps.

Additionally, today’s update brings support for searching for a song by lyrics. This feature only recently came to the iOS counterpart of Apple Music, so it’s certainly notable to see the Android version gain support soon after. With search by lyrics, users can simply type in a notable lyrics from a song, and Apple Music will do its best to find what you’re looking for.

Other improvements include support for the recently-announced top 100 charts, as well as Friends Mixes. Here’s the full change log for Apple Music on Android’s latest update:

This update features:

- New Artist Page. Play an artist with one tap, or browse all of the music with the improved design.

Waze navigation now works with CarPlay

Waze for iPhone finally works with Apple CarPlay on iOS 12. The latest update to Waze lets you use the smart navigation app on the built-in screen in your car with CarPlay support. Waze on CarPlay includes voice search, reporting issues for other drivers, and more.


Saving time & avoiding traffic is even easier with these updates: – Waze now works with CarPlay – connect your iPhone and use Waze conveniently from your built-in car display (on supported models only)

Waze on CarPlay includes some unique features in addition to the route recommendations it is known for — for example, you can opt to use the daytime map at night which can improve legibility (or the night time map during the day) and change how your “car” on the map appears. Drivers can also accumulate points for using Waze — even with the CarPlay version.

Waze isn’t the only third-party navigation app to work with CarPlay. Shortly after iOS 12 was released last week, Google Maps also released promised CarPlay support for iPhone users.

Waze renders a bit funny and causes a lot of aliasing along roads on the Map.

Google Maps the search function is atrocious.

So far I can honestly say both option seems very amateur hour compared to Apple Maps outside of having the bigger databases of localised stuff.
