Android beating Apple, BlackBerry in smartphone war

This article is worthwhile because it tells users which os is more common and therefore which apps stores will prevail.

Personally, I like at least an even 3 horse race because with only one winner there is no innovation or price and quality battle. Diversity is great.

I don't think the ipad is overpriced - I shopped around and found that gave the best features for its price in the market.

Thank you for your post :) I would just like to inform you, that I own an Apple iPad, new iPod as well as iPhone, and I can assure you it has nothing to do with falling for their marketing ploy. I use them because I like the way it looks and works. For me, it is very easy to use, I have never had any trouble with any of my apple devices, so the reason I am a fan is because it suits my lifestyle and it works for me. It has absolutely nothing to do with marketing.

+1 Nicci, exactly how I feel

Well if you want to talk about common it would be the iphone???

they all look the same...4...4s...now that is a common phone...
"hey what phone you got there? oh it's an iphone..."

vs...

**** is that the new galaxy s3???? wow look at that baby!

Funny how people think because they have an iPhone they're in the minority.

I would hazard a guess that a phone that was released in October 2011 is in way more hands than a phone released in May 2012. Not even considering the other versions of the phone.

If you go by operating systems then iOS is the minority, but not if you go by phone models

Android ftw!

Oh man, stop teasing the i-phoniacs. This article already has them butthurt. Not good enough they have to justify they're little 3.5" everyday vs the superior Samsung products, now they've gotta read about it too :)

PS Since people seem to wanna use the all of android vs apple argument, please read this article http://news.cnet.com/8301-1035_3-57424779-94/samsung-pulling-away-from-apple-in-smartphone-market/ and STFU. Samsung is beating them on their own, the other android manufacturers are just the cherry on the cake.

People who have apple products amaze me, I have a mate who is a die hard apple zombie.
Its 2012 and what? You cannot even Bt a file? Really?
and you want to tell me you didn't fall for their marketting ? Yeah right.
I had an iphone, hated it

More iPhone models than Androids? :erm:

For Pete's sake.....Android is an operating system, and iPhone is a brand model.

If you compared iPhone with Samsung S11 or whatever, then that would be valid

Well, yea but... you've still got the entire range of iPhones on the market to take into consideration. It's difficult to make ANY kind of definitive statements about one OS beating another though because you need to define the metrics so carefully; even this thread title is misleading and quite reprehensible.

On one hand you have the sum total of handsets sold in which case yes Android is ahead of Apple and has been for a few years (you could also claim that tap water is 'beating' bottled water). On the other hand you can break it down into actual manufacturers in which case it basically becomes a Samsung vs Apple showdown, with every other maker not breaking even - making the 'beating' claim spurious.

Then it's which handsets exactly are selling, and how much operating profit is being generated out of those per handset? A large number of the Android phones are hitting the lower end pricing models, where Apple isn't even interested in playing - and returning fairly paltry profits back to Samsung. Then Samsung is making some profit, Google is making some (and how to define Google's actual profit on Android? Ad views?), all-in-all it's a very jumbled marketing scenario.

To be 'beating' another manufacturer, you'd need a clear victory across all metrics; such as the BlackBerry story, where revenue, phones sold, and everything else is on a downhill trend.

Samsung (or rather: market analysts) have just been caught with their pants down in the Apple-Samsung trial in the U.S. Unlike Apple, Samsung only report sell in numbers to sales channels, not the sell out to users. Today they had to do the latter in the trial (U.S. numbers only). It turns out that analysts' recent claims of "Samsung outselling Apple in U.S. in smartphones in Q2 2012" were false, by multiple factors. IDC, Gartner, etc. will get to hear quite a handful from their clients. Since Samsung also does not provide any actual sell through numbers worldwide, one might reasonably suspect that worldwide claims are also quite off.

Hope that's not true. The sound of crying fandroids hurts my ears.

Nevertheless, comparing Samsung's domestic phone revenue to Apple's from June 2010 to June 2012, Fried comes up with US$7.5B in revenue for Samsung, and my math shows a total of about $36B for Apple -- nearly five times as much. The higher average selling price of the iPhone contributes heavily to this disparity, as the iPhone only outsold Samsung's overall units by ~60 million to 21.25m in the same period.

Lots of inconvenient facts coming out of this trial.
