Android >>> iOS

I found the opposite to be true.
Try finding an alternative to Plex for Android, then be baffled why VLC for Android lacks features that are in the iOS version.

Then find out Plex uses the default ExoPlayer which everyone hates, you can use an external player but then you it doesn’t track what’s being watched.

Paid and free options, which equally both suck.
Plex Lifetime sub here. I find Plex on Android deals with everything really well. Play 4k streams local and remote and it works.

My sister who connects my server cannot play certain videos on her 120mbps line whether it's her iphone or her AppleTV 4k. Always generates issue that not enough bandwidth. My android phone connected to her WiFi has no issues pulling it down, and yes I checked all her settings .

Made me reconsider getting an AppleTV 4k and now will just use the Plex app on TV at home until it's no longer supported

Not fully true. Said App would need to be compatible for all supported (current iOS) devices & we know that would mean a (more) wider variety of screen sizes & resolutions.

I think one of the main reasons for the more progressive nature of App development on iOS vs Android is purely revenue potential. iOS users (generally) have a higher propensity to whip out their wallets.

Referring to apps like Instagram. Just using new phones as an example, would it be easier to make sure the app is not just compatible but runs as intended with the 4 or so iPhones released in a cycle or the more than 1000 Android phones (MrWhosTheBoss’ figure) released over the same period?

Not a dig by the way, just actually wondering.

So, I call bullshit that Google photos, OneDrive and other apps can sync in background even if enabled on iOS.
So I tried from when you initally posted, I set it up and left it. When I unlocked the phone, I did get a notification not everything was synced.

Apple is rough on permissions, OneDrive does tell you if background sync isn't enbled but also the Photo's permission needs to be on "All"

This is by no means an endorsement, it was an known issue and I might be just lucky that almost nothing else is enabled run in the background.
There’s simply too many buttons to turn for it to work well.

Just today, helping friend migrate from 6s to 13 Max Pro 1TB!!.

Another stupid thing we found out today. Friend has 200GB iCloud sub. 160GB used. One his new 1TB phone, it says iCloud backup impossible - not enough space. He had to upgrade to 2TB plan for 150 per month. Overpriced. How come they don't have a 1TB plan.

Writing now, I just perhaps realised iCloud needs to have space to back up old and new phone hence the error. Friend will only wipe old phone in one week - just in case!!
Well he is paying R45 for the 200GB, I assume in a family plan since the 6s was max 32GB.
Also some apps backup 'double' if not turned off like Whatsapp, Whatsapp itself will backup then it also backup with the phone.

The problem wasn’t Plex, the problem was an alternative to Plex.
Plex doesn’t license every codec, which is understandable but Google Play doesn’t have any alternative.
VLC only supports a DLNA connection.

@SauRoNZA has shared all the apps he uses that allows family sharing, parental controls is another niche that only exists within the Apple ecosystem.

Funnily enough the issue I had with Huawei Watch GT2e synced to my iPhone was that it would notify me too much e.g. when I am in a MS Teams meeting that has a lot of people who are active in the chat section the GT2e would literally notify me of every single message, not so cool when you have over 100 people in your call
Can’t remember how I solved it, think I just disabled the MS Teams notifications on it.

Did you have Huawei Health App active in Background App Refresh?

Edit: @Mosgi

Ah yes, forgot about that part, drove me nuts, especially on webinars with lots of people commenting, even after leaving the call, it still kept going.

Will revert once I’ve tested YouTube and Netflix again

The dev tools still make it very easy to do it all for a very limited set of devices and hence the quality goes up.

And now with the M1 it’s even easier to port it to desktop as well.

Try set the quality to original.

Sounds counter intuitive but it means the server does less work and hands it over “as is” to the client device.

I watch 4K Remuxes on my Apple TV and iOS devices without an issue using Plex.

Could also be like the problem I had in the past where you set a bandwidth limit for remote playing, but then don’t include the local network in the sublet list and it considers local devices as remote has hits the bandwidth cap.

Maybe iOS adheres to that setting where Android doesn’t.

To this day I don’t understand why WhatsApp does that when it’s built into the OS.

If they offered some other means of backup it would make sense but as it stands it’s just idiotic.

Yup, so, as my server can't do transcoding, settings on mobile apps, and TVs is Original and I helped my sister setup the stuff to make sure transcoding never happen (except for the audio bit when required) On my ISP server side, I have 100Mbps upload bandwidth, of which I told Plex it has 90Mbps.

I don't have an Apple 4K TV at home (yet), so just using local app on TV and this plays everything with no issues except for one movie. Screen goes all multicoloured. Plex is configured not to require auth on my internal networks including iOT LAN on which TV is connected. So locally it's working well.

So what's nuts after double checking the settings on her devices , is her iOS devices have a bandwidth issue playing the file on her Wifi network, but my android phone does not, connected to the same network. The only difference I am thinking now, is that I am using one of my predefined accounts on my Plex Server/Account. She is using her own plex account (she paid for the software to use on her phone) ... there could be a difference there. Next time I am there, I will try with my wife's iPhone to see if it does the same.

Maybe it’s going through the Relay?

Oh right I didn’t realise she was actually remote for some reason.

Worth checking what the restriction on upload is for remote, could be Android is ignoring it or like you said different accounts making a difference.

I haven’t actually tried remote as I was always on DSL and didn’t have the bandwidth.

Similar error?

Upped it to 100Mb now but it still says that.

Will reload Plex and see if it takes then.

S22 Ultra looks tempting going by the leaks, it’s like a S21 Ultra and Note 20 Ultra had a baby :D
I hope it comes here with Snapdragon 8 Gen1 in SA.

I have an upgrade due this year, but the 11 Pro Max has got so much life left in it, I’ve been thinking about ending this contract, moving to prepaid and then just waiting for 14 Pro Max to land and make a decision from there.

... But so expensive!

I think the S21 Ultra shouldn't match the iPhone 12 Pro either? I could be mistaken - but if true, that's a more expensive phone with a worse camera.

Snapdragon Gen1 seem to be a bit of a hot chip.

Yeah, chip wise it may only be able to match up to A14 (iPhone 12), Apple have killed it in this area with TSMC.

Hmmm….let’s see what happens, a part of me has really been missing the SPen that I had on my Note8 on every phone I used since.

Yikes, these videos are not giving me a lot confidence in the Snap 8 Gen1
GPU has similar power consumption as M1 which sits in iPad Pro and MacBooks, geez like! Even on lower loads, still worse power consumption than the much older 865. That first video is putting me off, the power efficiency is incredibly bad compared to A15 and this years new iPhone on A16 will probably be equal if not better than A15 which seems to have great efficiency.

Xiaomi 12 review is worrying, overheating just like 888.
What the hell is going on with Samsung’s fabrication process? I believe they are the ones doing these chips for Qualcomm.
