Sure it does not have an eternet port, but you gonna need some serious piss poor WiFi for that to be an issue. Connect on the 5ghz band and you have a few hundred MB at low latency perfect for multiple 4k streams, let alone 1 HD stream.
What alternatives are you subscribed to ? Hulu ? Amazon Prime ?Currently have Netflix sub on my Mibox but playing second fiddle to alternatives. I'd rather pay for the alternatives.
Telkoms Lit box is awesome, more usb ports than the Mi box and it has an ethernet port.
The android TV OS on it is stock so the interface looks identical to the Mi box. The latest lit box now includes an improved remote with a mic for voice commands, for instance I tell it to shutdown and it turns off the box and my TV together.
Having used other android boxes before I can't stress enough how much better the android TV OS is over full android OS boxes. Much more suited for TV use. Its a lot more streamlined and snappy. Apps made for android TV are designed to be a lot more simple to navigate compared to apps made for your phone.
Another plus for the lit box is you don't have to worry about losing support for local apps like DStv now and showmax. Netflix, Plex etc works perfectly.
Telkom stores sell them for R1100 cash or include them free on some data contracts. The problem is finding a store that has stock and calling stores is nearly impossible, ironic right.
I got lucky on gumtree, found a new one still sealed for R800, someone took out a data contract and sold the free included lit box.
Around R2000 max, I see the shields are more than that though. What's your budget?
Nvidia Shield is probably the best pick.
Are you referring to the Mi Box??I am 100% opposed to it. Had one for a day and returned it the next. I blame quality control (because others are happy with theirs).
so would the Roku streaming stick + be an alternative?Unless you have the high end rokus, they kak. Thier remotes are also **** because of kak developers
They mirror the wireless signal in your house which causes network degrade.
Kwese play has an exclusive network setup which is greatly limited, they give us about 10% of the South African Netflix options.
The stick is Thier lowest level player, it's what I have and its quite rubbish. It works, but it's slow and very limited. Nothing will really compare with android.so would the Roku streaming stick + be an alternative?
i thought the streaming stick plus was actually only beaten by the Roku Ultra? The stick is Thier lowest level player, it's what I have and its quite rubbish. It works, but it's slow and very limited. Nothing will really compare with android.
Rather get a Google certified device. The roku devices don't have support for the DStv now app for instance.i thought the streaming stick plus was actually only beaten by the Roku Ultra?
im not referring to the basic unit but the plus version
dont you need a DSTV subscription for DSTV now?Rather get a Google certified device. The roku devices don't have support for the DStv now app for instance.
As a 'normal' local box without spending thousands on a Shield, the best you'll get right now is the Telkom LIT box @ R1,100.00ish. It's Google and Netflix certified - so it does Netflix UHD HDR if you have the package. Obviously DSTV Now and Showmax are supported as well. It had a Bluetooth remote with Google Assistant.
Second to that, you can get the Mi S ... more expensive than the LIT and no ethernet port, as well as a single USB port.
If you going to run a DNS/VPN then a Roku is great if not it's limitednot really a "local" box kind of guy
i hear what you're saying but globally i see Roku is recommended by most sites/reviews
nothing global on the Telkom LIT box?
would love the shield but expensive
What I mean is the LIT it is brought through local channels, sold through a local supplier with a local warranty and support.not really a "local" box kind of guy

Get an Apple TV.
Everything works with no need to second guess anything.
Or a Roku.
Thing is it's 3 times the price ?
And I don't think it can do YouTube in UHD ?
With Google and Netflix certification, you don't really need to second guess anything
You personally, you don't. You use your Grandpa's.dont you need a DSTV subscription for DSTV now?
I went looking for a Telkom LIT box this weekend and couldnt find any stores with stock. As a 'normal' local box without spending thousands on a Shield, the best you'll get right now is the Telkom LIT box @ R1,100.00ish.
