I have the Gear 2... notifications on wrist is awesome... but it's really lacking any other type of app support...

There are hundreds of apps including Vivino to allow me to surreptitiously scan wine bottles for info ala James Bond.

Yay. Received my Android Wear 5 update this morning. Now I can seriously start some benchmarks tests for a review.

Let me know if anyone wants me to look at something specifically.

Just give us a nice review that details the notification system, battery life, sound quality and outdoor visibility. That's the only things for now that I'm interested in.

Sound quality? Android Wear devices don't come with speakers. Only the Gears come with speakers because Samsung.

yeh, that's right.

i'm just testing battery life before I do a little review. Doing two different tests. 1 with screen always on, and one without.

faniedry, how is the G Watch R with ambient mode on the whole time? Is it like a dimmed toned down version of what you see when the watch lights up normally, or is it like fully on?

I am seriously considering this watch, and I want the watch face to be fully visible at all times...I suspect that would eat the battery, but hopefully it will last one workday?

Do you get 'looks' and interest for wearing a smartwatch?

Depends really on the watch face used. Some of the customs ones you can change what you want to see during always on mode.

The one i use is a standard watch face and seems to be the most battery efficient one. If everything goes well, i have to charge it when i go to bed night 2

Does anyone have experience with the Asus Zenwatch? I particularly would like to know how its ambient mode compares to the G Watch R's.

EDIT: found a very good article. I am definitely rather going with the G Watch R.

https://www.reddit.com/r/AndroidWear/comments/2qb3ia/clarifying_ambient_modes_everything_you_could/

TL;DR: Some devices use a low-bit ambient mode that developers don't appear to be properly supporting yet, which is why many watch faces look bad in ambient mode on devices like the ZenWatch. But some watch faces are optimised for low-bit ambient mode, which is why they look better than unsupported watch faces in ambient mode - but even those watch faces will never look as good as devices that use the normal ambient mode, like the G Watch R.
