Announcing a Community Wi-Fi Mesh

Iliyan,

I have read thru this with some laughs, horror, and amazement.

In short there is legally 83Mhz available in the ISM band, maybe you should get one of your wiz kids to talk to a RF engineer (not the 2 to 3 week type, preferably the type that writes B.Eng M.Eng or D.Eng behind there names). Failing that get a book on RF band planning, and you will realize that there is technically some serious flaws in your mesh idea.

Regards
505
B.Eng

Excuse the typo's my keyboard is a bit old. Is it not going to be possible to connect to the three sites i mentioned, in the future ? and if so what do you predicate the rollout date to be ? before the end of 2007.

I think he needs to figure out how to squeeze 50-000 "nodes" into 1 channel within the 83mhz before he can answer that one GuRu

I hate to be an @$$ but when I see something I don't like I must comment as Im seriously ethical in nature.

I have followed this thread word for word and in all honesty, and I seriously doubt any of you can deny it one bit, I think you all have been a bit harsh on this Iliyan guy. Go back to page one and read the exact comments in reply to his request, just do it as a dam favour.

So what if what he is proposing is illegal unknowingly to him (if it even is), and if you disagree to some statements he has made. MANNERS MAKETH MAN my friends. You all are undoubtedly driving the guy mad and have disappointed him in his attempt to get assistance from the members of this forum. I don't know this guy whatsoever and I wish him all the best, and I also wish I get some of that Internet he is suggesting, even though Im not expecting anything soon considering the area I live in.

Ask yourselves this, have any of you posted any "!!serious" offers or advice to his very first post? Some few were made in jest I believe but nothing other than that.

I am not sure if I am allowed to punt a commercial business here, so if I am breaking any forum rules, dear mod, you can delete this... But before doing that, please consider that this post is announcing a new wireless broadband operation as well as offering substantial benefits to the members of these forums.

Currently we are looking for some resources to join us - we have openings for 4 local (JHB) direct sales, 1 admin and 1 technical - that can join us as early as the mid of May. We would prefer someone with experience in IP and Wi-Fi, but that is not necessary for one to qualify. The job is structured more around managing the mesh nodes and will not require installation of any kind or climbing on roofs/masts :-)

We also decided to treat preferentially the members of these forums - so, if you would like to become part of this exciting venture, please drop us a line at [email protected] - we are sure that we will find a way to get you involved and who knows, you may even end up with a free Internet connection.

Ummmmmmmmmm Hello!?!?!?!??!?!?!?!?!?!?!? A humble beginning followed by a request for assistance and he gets punted for this?! Thats not what this forum is about I believe!!!

And yes marketing aside we all need a service like this and we need to push for any bit of hope. Why throw it away? If he is wrong then tell him, don't slap him in the face.

Unfortunately I cannot give assistance or comment on the product much as my knowledge of wireless is limited to simple home networks. But this thread is going nowhere and it seems as though you people are leeching this guy to no end.

Many people would have told you all to piss off a long time ago yet he has held on thus far. Keep that in mind when you consider how genuine he may be.

No fan at all. Did not say that in the least. Its like in the other thread when I was being "put in my place" for moaning about why a young white guy has to suffer for a job because of what happened many many years ago.

Suddenly I was blamed for being immature and a type of low kid and not supporting what was fought for back in the day. Some of you people don't read and think at the same time FFS!!!!! It applies in this thread right from the beginning.

I really dont care about wifi-mesh(tm) - its his snake-oil that is being sold. When the bottle is finished, please, I am sure there will be a "Unicorns and other Myths" section on the forum soon

I want to know how -118 is derived. all my physics calculations on the atmospheric and Thermal noise@20Mhz point to completely different numbers.

Oh yes the cheap comments :) no worries :D

@ Guru soz about the editing but took some harsh comments away just to keep most happy. It's actually habit, I always read my posts over and over just to be sure. And I always spot something that needs editing dammit !! :)

EDIT --- Geeeeeee when one buys a new car they sure get a lot of mail don't they!

EDIT --- Oh no wonder, its all the dumb surveys and questionnaires

EDIT --- I hate questionnaires dont you??!

EDIT --- Even though I did a marketing degree these almost put me off!!

EDIT --- Disgusting. Do I really need to fill all this nonsense out?!

Dear Iliyan

I have no idea whether your venture is technically/financially feasible but I can advise you with certainty that the person who drew up your "Acceptable Use Policy" is not terrible skilled in matters of law.

From the Wi-Fi Mesh website ("Acceptable Use Policy"):
1.4. We may amend, modify or substitute this AUP at any time and any such modification, amendment or substitution shall be posted on the relevant web site and become automatically effective upon all Users as from the date of posting.

If you take a look at this
you will find that:
It is a very clear principle, in our law of contract, that, once a contract has been concluded, one party cannot unilaterally vary its terms.

I have no idea where you dug up this legal adviser of yours but I suggest you change advisers. The above clause makes the contract invalid as the contract requirement of legality is not met. This in turn makes the contract null and void, so no legal obligation can come into being. So it is not a "legally binding relationship" as stated elsewhere in your "contract".

Try not to get sued in your endeavor. You will get the **** kicked out of you in court with stunts like the above.

Listen guys, you all realise this guy isnt serious, its a foul hoax, designed to bait us all. Looks like he won on that account. At least this thread offered some very good humour to us :) . Pity he spent money just to get us all. Oh, btw Iliyan, do you really think were so niave as tothink were anonymous? but hey I reckon we must all have been to get caught by this one. Hope youre feeling proud, well done!!!

Well if it is a hoax then its just a pity :(

But a poor website doesn't mean its a hoax if you are using that as your justification. Take for example the rough comments made on emcoms website. The guy there wrote back and told you all off and suddenly everyone just shut up lol.

But GTS!!!!!!! now that was the biggest most gut wrenching hoax I ever saw :(

Same class if you ask me. And no the site isnt my justification, just supporting evidence.

Conspirator,

Thank you for highlighting a potential issue in our AUP - it looks like you know this subject well...

I discussed it with my legal advisor (who is a partner in the most potent legal firm in SA) and he re-assured me that this particular statement is accurate and he is comfortable that if challenged, it will hold in court.

I don't want to discuss in detail his answer here, but it goes along the lines that our AUP is a special kind of contract, that is not explicitly entered into at a specific date but is assumed and it is renewed periodically at the beginning of every month after the payment is received so if we introduce changes to the contract those changes will only be applicable at the next contracting renewal period which will not constitute change of terms during the contract period but before the contract period. Or something like that...
