You can also look VW touareg, just dont buy one with air suspension, only cost 30k per strut to replace at the dealership. Parts are plenty and plenty of people that works on them.

I actually really like Tiguan's, sure they are based on the same platform as the Golf/Jetta/A3/A3 Sedan/Q3/Leon/TT/Beetle/Etc. but they are a lot more spacious with better ground clearance and a pleasure to drive on a daily basis. My wife has a Q3 and I am not a fan of it, you may as well have a Golf or A3 or even a TT, it feels cramped inside, the ride is crashy and the 2.0TDi coupled with the S-Tronic (DSG) gearbox is horrendous compared to the 3.0 V6 TDi and torque converter automatic in my Touareg.

And from what I hear, despite the 3.0D being a great engine, it is a complete nightmare to work on, especially the twin and triple turbo variants in the 40D and M50D.

Looking for price/performance/economy and diesel pretty much only European will work.
Volvo XC60 as mentioned, Audi Q5, Q3, merc GLC 250
Then if you don't mind chewing more fuel/going slower for more reliability then Mazda CX5, Hyundai Tuscon 2.0DS. /Japanese
If the Audi Q3 is big enough it will rank well overall presuming the gearbox lasts...
Simply the bigger the car the more it costs to own in the main.
The ideal is an an older car that is efficient and reliable as the two main costs are depreciation and fuel.
So start with whats the smallest car that will do the job, then the most reliable so you can buy older to lower the depreciation costs....if you monthly mileage is high then fuel efficiency is rather important too.
I have drive a 2014 Audi Q5 3.0D twin turbo. 9.3l/100km average and 5.1s to 100km/h
and fuelly.com/car are what I used to get average l/100km as I do 25k a year and efficiency is the biggest factor for me.

A couple of updates here. Budget upped to R550k.
Found a couple of 2017-2018 X3's but price wise they are similarly priced to more specced out X4's so leaning towards that. Anyone have feedback on how the X4 drives? Only getting a chance to drive it on Friday.
Mazda CX - Nice car but comparatively when driving it, the BMW's drive a bit smoother. SO felt the same. 2021/2022 interior better and on par with VW and BMW entries but 2017-2018 models are not.
Toyota Cross - No stock and overpriced where available.
Volvo - No experience here so still open to options.

Drives lekker, 2018 X4 but i'm M40i (3L petrol)
X3 vrs X4 i guess comes down to what you want out of the back seating area, Backseat headroom will be more with the X3.
To me i find the X3's ugly compared to the X4 but its just personal taste.
No bad things to speak of & i think i'm just going to keep it once warranty is up.
X3 back end is more square.

Things changed a bit again. X4 was far from decent. Lots of space but something was wrong with the one I drove.
While at the dealership, saw a 2019 X3 I liked way out of budget
so I'll be selling my 220d and replacing it with this. Mini will be the run around for a while till I win the lotto and buy the M2 Comp

Mini aren't the most reliable of cars from what I hear. You should sell it for a small Toyota that's more suited for run around.Have a decent mechanic I know not far from home.

They aren't lol. That's how I found the BMW mechanic.
Put some money into fixing a lot of the issues in the car already so comfortable driving it to get the value back else trade it for a Golf TDI or something more muted.
Later this year though, whole experience was incredibly draining and frustrating.
