It always makes me smile how these guys come in and post things like this and then they are not seen again on the thread....

I too view this as a good thing. They have caught the guy and are doing something about it.

The reason this dude was suspended is because he didn't funnel some of his ill gotten funds to the ANC.
If he had, we would get the same idiotic excuses used when a politician gets found out and isn't brought to book - things like "A true leader doesn't just exit office at the 1st sign of trouble - this is when he's the most valuable and it's his duty to stay in office and lead"

I just dont think some can comprehend the tremendous amount of work taking place in each of the host cities. People working 24/7 on various aspects of hosting the event to the very last detail.

Each time there is a setback its bye bye 2010. The journey was never going to be easy in South Africa. We aren't immune to in-fighting or rising costs of building materials or even labour strikes.

Heck France 98 had their public transport sector strike the day before the world cup started. London 2012 is already sitting with a R150 billion cost of hosting the olympic Games. Germany even completed two stadia in the year of the world cup. Sydney 2000 has its fair share of in-fighting yet it staged the best Olympic Games ever.

Its really immature to jump on some bandwagon each time incompetent people are fired or caught. We complain if they don't get exposed and we complain if they do.

You just have to remember that those countries are 1st world countries.
 
I believe SA has a lot of challenges to host this event. Soccer is the biggest by far, compared to other sports like Rugby, Cricket, or even squash LOL.
So yeah we can host other smaller sports, but soccer has billions of followers. SA is also bidding to host the Rugby world cup - i'm not sure what year though. So will we be able to host that?

agreed. my ref wrt bandwagon was that each setback or challenge or obstacle results in a bye bye 2010 bandwagon. its just a clear indication of the ignorance about the amount of work and scale of work taking place at stadia and behind the scenes.

after issues with stadia, electricity..there will be something next..but thats all just part of the journey rather than FIFA keeping their finger on some button ready to move it to germany.

i get told that all the time.

take londons hospitals..our public hospitals are better than some of their private hospitals..this is first hand experience..many of my friends fly down to RSA to give birth here instead of in the 1st world hospitals.

3rd world RSA doesnt imply that we are more prone to infighting or that R150 billion spending on an event is somehow more "ok" in london.
we're so 3rd world in south africa we are doing what 1st world london couldn't do with wembley. we're building/upgrading ten stadia at a combined cost below wembley in half the time..are we really that 3rd world?

having achieved record revenues moving close to 35% higher than germany 2006...are we still 3rd world?

i fully understand that we have different priorities or should have different priorities in RSA but people forget that 97% of expenditure over the next 3 years is on infrastructure that won't disappear after the four week event. Neither will the 3% spent on stadia.

You are going to get flamed for being positive,people want 2010 to fail.You never see people post good things about it,like how the stadiums are ahead of schedule etc.With the exception of yourself.
2010 will be a success.

Remember mexico,argentina and columbia hosted the world cup..They are third world.

I believe I'm being more realistic than positive.
Its fact that our transport systems even with the improvements might not cope, its also fact that 2 or 3 stadia face sustainbility issues. But the reality is also that many projects would not have seen the light of day without 2010.

2010 is a journey rather than a destination, challenges and obstacles should be embraced rather than used as some hope for failure. south africa is a terrible complicated country, so its no surprise that the road to 2010 would be no different.
