Another Eskom Blackout website launched

Simple but they can supply the 3000Mw 24/7 thus the request to use extra power at off peak periods. Now they want to apply penalties if you use the power in off peak times too by virtue of this fixed quota?
You're right; in theory it could work well if they could have a system where e.g. perhaps electricity during the night (say 10pm to 5am) is (say) cheaper, to encourage more people to shift their usage to off-peak (e.g. work at night, as I've incidentally always done), but I think the problem is that the entire country's metering is not geared to this - unless you read every meter twice a day, you can't tell anything about what times an individual household or business consumed electricity. You could install smarter meters but imagine the cost of overhauling the entire country's metering systems.

Smarter metering might well become normal in 2020 or so globally, but I think it might work on a limited scale to begin with if aimed at, say, specific businesses / corporate customers.

Erwin is the biggest ass and should be skinned as now he talks with strength but he is the biggest failure.
Yeah, he's really revealed what a slimeball he is, he's become nothing but a weasel word factory, they could probably generate enough extra power from all the hot air coming from his mouth.

Surely not!! If Eskom is able to generate 3000mW, if you as a consumer then use this power at 2am or 4pm how does this make a difference? You are still consuming non renewable energy?

Actually Syndyre is right even in a very literal/direct sense; AFAIK, some of the peak generating capacity even comes from more expensive types of generators that kick in only at peak times (I don't know the details but vaguely recall something about a gas plant in the Cape). This electricity thus really is "more expensive".

Yeah remember reading somewhere that open cycle gas turbine plants like the one at Atlantis cost 30 times more to run than base load coal power stations.
