I'm gonna have this wonderful choice in a few months too, and i already know my answer:
Cancel contract, Prepaid is the way to go. You have much more control, and your usage are REALTIME!! [last part is important, contracts do not have realtime monitoring!]
Cancel, get a new sim. This is easier than you think. Prepaid sim is like R2 at PicknPay and off you go.
Anyhow, on Vodacom Prepaid can actually buy 1GB, use it up in 15 days and immediately buy another 1GB (MTN is still horrible slackers in this department though) .... In fact you can buy your new bundle BEFORE the old one is used up even [in the last 10MB i believe] .
I've been burned so many times on contract it's not even funny. You go out of bundle -now- you only hear about it a few hours later ...and you're screwed anyhow.
Sure it's nice to just get your 2GB automatically, but overall , your ability to manage your usage is extremely limited. Typical example : You go on december holidays without a PC and you PAY for that 2GB you never used. Heck sometimes you don't need your own internet [business gave you something] and you're again screwed.
And as many said, with prepaid you actually have no obligation to stick with someone specific. You can even get an MTN card,Virgin,Cell-C and Vodacom and all try them without feeling you're losing data every month.
I would also recommend even buying a modem cash/budget instead of taking out a data contract. If you can get it on a contract that you would've taken ANYWAY [i.e your phone contract], fine, but the -value- you get out of DATA contract vs. prepaid is not worth it. You don't get free data, no special rates, nothing, just a modem which you pay for IN FULL ANYWAY . Contract is not cheaper than the raw data bundles, in fact you can clearly see you don't get the modem for "free" as you pay at least R30-R50 more for the contract than the actual bundle .
This is in complete contrast to voice contracts that you get all kinds of stuff the bigger the monthly contract [bigger phone, lower tariffs , more minutes]. On data contract , nothing, you can take a 2GB contract and get the exact same modem than the dude with the 250MB contract...no value at all.
