Good day all,

I'm not going to make this long...or too long. I had a 1Mb Uncapped package from my ISP since December 2011 and it was working 100% even though my attenuation was real bad. No disconnects whilst playing games online or general browsing.

I upgraded to 4Mb in February 2012 and was syncing at +-2Mb due to my line attenuation. I had disconnects and rubberbanding a few times a day. My line eventually got worse and I decided to downgrade to 1Mb again.

Although I downgraded to 1Mb I am experiencing even worse line stability issues. I can't keep a connection for longer than an hour (from 10 - 11 pm) and any other time I get disconnects every 5 minutes. I've given up playing online or downloading via HTTP.

My attenuation sucks due to Telkom connecting me to an exchange 6+ km from my place instead of 2 closer DSLAMs (both less than 1Km from my place). My ISP battling with Telkom to change me to one of the closer DSLAMs but Telkom keeps telling them they contacted me (which they obviously didn't) and I confirmed it has been resolved.

If the last resort to persuade Telkom does not work I am forced to downgrade to 384kb :cry:

I would rather go without Internet than be stuck on 384kb. I'm thinking of going wireless but alot of forumites complained and I'm not too chuffed on being stuck with a 2gb cap on one of the cellulare providers (the SO needs her weekly "linux distros" you know). I usually download about 100gb per month (sitting on 50gb so far for the month).

I would've gone with 8ta but unfortunately I don't have coverage.

Any other Internet route I can follow which won't cost an arm and a leg...kinda need to use them for a few years.
 
yeah, downgrade to 384kbps. Max DL Speed: 48kb/s, maximum upload: 12.5kb/s.

You get a lot of lag in online gaming.

If you wont want 384kbps adsl, rather get that 8ta 10gb thing
 
Thanks Heretic. On the site it indicates that excessive and/or malicious use not permitted. So...would you maybe know how much excessive actually entails? "Linux Distros" probably falls under malicious too :whistle:

At the moment I can't even stream vids on 360p without buffering every 10 seconds so downgrading to 384 definitely a no go and no 8ta coverage in my area.
 
I agree with Heretic. Going the Amobia route once I return from my honeymoon. I have clear line if site to tower which is a must...get Amobia to do site test. There site is old...but they say they have a rolling window of three days, so on a 1mg uncapped account you can do 4gigs in three days. Which is about 40gigs a month...but have seen results of people doing more than this without issues. They measured at my place and said I can get 30ms latency. They also use a rebranded mweb uncapped account...so should be good. Will have more proper results in three weeks. Oh and they have a 24hr turn around time on hardware related issues and technician appointments. +1
 
@MDE -Thanks for the advice bud. I'm leaning towards an average of 150gb downloads a month. I'm going with the 3Mb Uncapped. Hopefully I can get good latency. Will only be from May though since I am going to pay my ISP for April month.

However with Amobia you can forget about anything what has P2P involved.

Yes, I'm using uncapped.

Torrents: speed mostly in range of few KB/s if not 0KB/s, rarely gets above 10KB/s or more, no seeding at all.
Skype: Can hear remote side, but remote side don't hear me or broken voice. Sometimes file transfers freeze.
Tunngle VPN: Connection is lost very often.
OpenTTD: Connection gets lost in first minute and never comes back.
World of Tanks: Not sure if it is P2P based, but controls don't get through or too late.

However, no problems with HTTP, full advertised speed, however not sure about high-level packages.

That's the issue there. Why would you give your line to your ISP? Get your line back with Telkom. You'll get the problem resolved sooner that way.

That might be true but Telkom not very helpfull towards changing your DSLAM. I called a few times and the Telkom consultant (who by the way is begging the DOJ not to sue them) said indirectly that I must just live with it.

Erm are you not confusing a Junction box with a DSLAM?

Not too sure what a Junction box is but when I check on broadbandstats it states the DSLAM's.
 
Okay cool.

Where abouts do you stay? Do you know how far you are from the tower you connecting too?
