GMail is better and it's free, so the spyware and antivirus issue becomes a moot point. Also there's no point in needing local access to your emails if your ISP hardcaps you. But anyway glad to hear that you enjoy paying twice the price for an account which doesn't even rollover your bandwidth to the next month
This is a hijack, but :

Riiiiiiiiight. I wouldn't trust Google as far as I can throw them. They're going to be the next Microsoft, mark my words. It happens whenever a corporation gains too much market share.

They say that even though they scan your emails so that they can give you relevant advertising, that they don't actually record the content of the emails.

They have been experimenting with technology/software that would access your microphone and then monitor the sounds for advertising purposes. I.e. if you're watching tv, or someone else in the room is watching tv, that this would then be picked up on the mic and processed so that they can again give relevant advertising.

In America they want to launch their own wireless network that tracks where everyone is at any given time, again for the purposes of giving advertising that's relevant to your current location. (I.e. if you stand outside a wimpy that you'd get hamburger ads).

Recently Google also went to court with a competing company because Google messed around with their own stats to make the other company appear less popular according to Google searches than it really was (I'm working from memory here so the details are a bit sketchy - the reason I mention this is that it's clear they're not adverse to manipulating the truth if it suits them).

The bottom line is that Google brokers in information. Your personal details are another kind of information. You have to be INSANE to trust Google with your privacy, given that the information is financially valuable to them if they didn't.

They have to earn revenue somehow...

They can try to make those advertising link on the side more accurate, as they only earn revenue when ppl click those links. Nobody is forcing you to click those links and buy the goods. Google is an awesome company. I really hope they dont become another Microsoft

I've currently got an Mweb Dial-up account (Still have a @iafrica.com) I want to upgrade to DSL, and been shopping around. MWeb is one of the most expensive ISP out there!! Anyone who signs up with them is really stupid. But then again..most ppl are just sheep and follow Mweb and Telkom ads.

My uncle is with mweb. Has been for centuries. (has an @icon.co.za email). He upgraded to adsl a few months ago on the 1Gb package, and is really complaining about the service he's been getting. But then, he's been complaining about the service for years, but just hasn't switched because he wanted to keep his email address. I think it is getting to the point now where he is going to switch soon, because he phoned me a copule of nights back to ask for information about alternatives...

Tell him to get a gmail (or other email service), notify all his contacts of his new email address. Just have his icon.co.za (mweb) mail fowarded to his gmail account for about three months, then once he stops receiving mail at the icon address, apply for cancellation.

This is the only way to change the address with out paying. Remember that you need to apply for cancellation 30 days or a calender month in advance.

Check usage on Mweb account

How do I check the usage on my mweb account? Thanks

How do I check the usage on my mweb account? Thanks

AFAIK login to the Mweb site with your email and it will show you your usage, alternatively I think there is an Mweb program

On the Mweb Homepage, scroll down to "My Adsl" on the left hand side, click "My Adsl", Enter your Sign Me in Login Details, and you'll be able to view your usage.

If you are already logged in (by clicking "My Account") just click on ADSL Usage. There's also a Mweb Stats Analyser.

*btw, my Mweb account finally got cancelled yesterday at 00:00, I had a 1 gig Account and I did about 1.5 gig's . My banking details were already removed, and the account cancelled so They can't do anything about it. I was planning on doing much more gigs on the account but I still had about 400 megs left to finish n my Cybersmart Account. If I were you "Voila" cancel the mweb account and go with Cybersmart or Openweb, as You'll get much more for what you paying Mweb.

Thanks for help and advice guys. One question though what is all the fuss regarding IS news servers about? From what I understand, it seems that international content can be downloaded without exceeding you Cap limit? If so, perhaps I should go with IS instead? Excuse me if this query is dumb.

New kid on the block

Greetings all. In my first month of using mweb on a 2gig account and already my cap is finished, now on my first booster and that too is almost dry. The wet dreams of having ADSL have now turned into nightmares. I have heard a few of you speak about webafrica so I checked it out. They are well priced but could anybody sell them to me a bit better please. Are they hard or soft capped? If I start downloading at 12pm on mweb account is there anyway way for them to charge me once I have gone over my cap and can abuse my cap say midmonth not end month. Wow that was alot of wind.
thanks all:D

Mweb is a ripoff - even telkom's pricing is better, and more flexible. IS has resellers that offer 3gb of international with a further 27gb local after that initial 3gb is used up - all for less than 2gb with mweb.

Dump Mweb - you're not doing yourself any favours.

I agree with bwana, dump mweb !

If you go over your cap they'll deduct it from next months cap. I was with meb dial for many years then I took the ADSL for about two months. Remember you have to a calender months notice to cancel. then on the last day of the month (after the calcellation notice) abuse the account, I only did 500 megs extra, but I could of at least done 2GB to 2.5GB extra if I planned correctly.

I would rather use dialup than use mweb. I hate them. Dont know how they got as far as they did in this country. Over priced and big headed.

Thank godness for webafrica and openweb.

Thanks all :-) feeling alot happier about changing over now. Dont think those crabs will ever stop pinching. They had their chance and they ruined. Well done MWEB another one just walked.

Thanks

Thanks people :-) feel alot better about changing over now. Dont think those crabs will ever stop pinching. Well done MWEB another one jusk walked. Ahhh the life and times of the South African Cybernaught

Sign the Cancellation form before the end of the month so by Jan next year you'll be free of Mweb. By sending the form now, December will count as the Calender months notice which is required for cancellation.

If you need the Cancellation form just pm me and I'll send it to you. You can also start notifying people that you changed your email address. Oh if you want a gmail address just pm your current email address and I'll send you an invite.

I've been for many years with mweb on dialup.
Wow, their adsl service is total rubbish.

They disconnect to check the cap every hour once I hit 90%.. And the problem now is, I still have to be with them for 2 months now before I can stop paying them...

Ahh Mweb were my dial up provider before I moved to iBurst. I rememeber wanting to keep my email address and them not being able to do that. 2 years ago that was. Good times.

Zell: Do you have two months because you have to give notice at the end of March?

Anyone noticed that MWeb's TV adverts say something like 'MWeb makes broadband simpler and more affordable...'? - I fail to see how this is true in the specific case of ADSL when MWeb charges much more than any other ADSL ISP for the same cap...

I saw one of their contrived ads yesterday. I hate them. They are lying as far as I am concerned. I don't understand how they get off charging what they do for the same service that others offer for way less.
