was wondering if anyone out there uses Xnets, aka, Xpress network solutions, aka Xnet internet service?

This bunch are based outside plettenberg bay on the garden route but apprently operate in 4 other provinces

I have had endless problems with connectivity and supposed "uncapped" access which is severly restricted once 6gb is hit

Constantly kicked off downloads, speed varies radically, emails get lost, no internet for days etc...

would love to hear any feedback as i am busy complaining to any organisations out there that will listen

just as an update..have now been threatened with legal action if i actively discourage other people from using their service. From what i see on similar isps on this forum others have experienced the same threats with similar co's in other areas when they renege on their service agreement

complain and get legal action...typical corporate

i still cant get a copy of my original contract and their T&C are not posted on their website as per most organisations rules an regs

anyone else out there had the same from these plonkers?

Am really keen to compile a dossier on these guys to present to the relevant authorities so if anyone knows anyone using xnets pls ask them to add their comment

On the positive side, I know of a B+B in Sedgefield who use them , and they seem to get decent service. Downloads stay constant at about 30kbps, so I'm guessing they're connected to a 384 line somewhere.

On the negative side, I once (a year or so ago) got onto their network using netstumbler which gave me the mac of a nearby user. Tried surfing for a minute before I got totally frustrated waiting for google to load and gave up. Worse than uninet, and that's bad. Tried again recently just for a laugh and they seem to have beefed up security - couldn't get in any more.

i have also heard good and bad stories. I reckon the b&b probably is a very small user though so doesnt tax their system and i doubt hit the 6gb "cap" my gripe with the cap is that i have been trying for 2 weeks to download a 700mb movie (called earthlings...its a free movie). On attempt 30/40 odd right now..even DAP cant restart broken downloads. So 30/40 attempts at say an avg of 50MB each = coupla gigs of uselss internet bandwidth...causing my 6GB cap to be bust

its taken all of 2 years to finally ascertain how their system works and now that i know i am out of there. Many many call ins. Various excuses..often the excuse is the tower burnt out? or their power supply failed? ...2 of the more popular reasons. One of the t&c of use for wisps is to have proper back up power supplies which they clearly dont

and now threatened with legal action if i speak to others to tell them to go elsewhere...its typical bully tactics and who cares about the customer

anyways thanks for listening. probably going dsl route with axxess or similar...after thorough reserach of course

xnets connectivity

Yep, I use Xnets... or try to when its working. Consistent connectivity is my biggest problem. I run two businesses so probably spend at least 6 hours a day online. I also chat to family overseas a lot via MSN or Skype. The problem is that within a space of an hour at any time online I could have several breaks in connection meaning reconnecting or redialing to continue my conversations. Most frustrating. Complaints get acknowledged but mostly thats as far as it goes. I have become background noise to them I think. Seems like service delivery with them is going the same way as the rest of the country. Unfortunately, besides Telkom dial-up they are the only other wireless.ADSL suppliers in our area so I have not other options. Who does one complain to - is there some governing body? Someone suggested ICASA. Any suggestions?

More Xnets probs

Hi Liambeats ,Im in the same possion as u atm , for the last 4 months or so Iv had the same problems with fluctuating speeds and failed downloads/utube vids/slow browsing/Disconneting from game, IRC and teamspeak servers.

A log on the IRC server showed 18 hours of disconnections almost to the second 10 min sessions,we will get DCed from the IRC , WOW and teamspeak servers all at the same time and then a sec later we can reconnect.

Was just Hoping you have had some luck or success with Xnets, as when I complain to them the all i hear is the from what they can see Iv got no probs.

The problem is that they are not giving a "real" explanation 1st they blame the wow server 1 play on the it was that we have been throtteled down to 128K then more nonsence. Our signal strenth is very good, the piont they are not seeing is the fact that we get DCed from everything at the same time like every 10 min, I mean how can getting DCed from a game server kick u outta a IRC channel ,lol, all they say is that everything looks good on their end and ours. ?_?

Uninet is around not sure if they stretch to Plett side.
Bully tactics sounds typical of some 2 way radio turned WiSP guys on the GardenRoute

Will be interesting to see that their bandwidth utilisation is like.
Congested I bet, contact Simon also complaining about congestion on their network http://goplett.co.za
Post a traceroute to 168.210.2.2
Over-subscribed thats all

Here in Zambia I am so sick and tired of disconnects, congested satellite bandwidth, I setup a linux box with Nagios and
Cacti to monitor their routers so that can show them whats up

Will send the warning and critical alerts to their NOC email address. aagh 128kb/s 2.5 Gb for $200/month

Thanx KIlos will try , the prob is that I stay in the forrest behind Sedg so there are only two SPs that can supply me ,Xnets and uninet. I was working for a business school as IT admin , and we used Uninet and i really dont wanna use them.

Another thing is Im in a 3 year contract with them so cant just change , @_@.

Do you want me to post a trace route here?

Rather PM
What about Wispernet now Hilbert as they are have a AP in this area

You must be working through to Xnet George and not to Xnet Plett.

Wow:eek::eek:... and I thought it was only us having trouble with xnets...

Everything everone says here is exactly the same with us (dodgy connections, SLOOOOOOW, etc). Ther excuse was that we live in a hollow, so they tried putting up a 5 meter (or so) pole above our roof but that didn't help jack ...
My mom signed a contract and its come to an end and she pondering whether to carry on using them (cause they guy there says we got an old antennae and the new ones are much stronger, whatever...) or to use telkom and be capped...

What do you guys say? Be capped rather or uncapped on an extremely unrelieable connection?

Like everyone else I have had bad service with all the previously quoted excuses from Xnets. Slow, timeouts etc .Can't wait for the day my contract finishes.

lol Jetlag there seems to be quite a few of us with the same prob, its a pitty +_+ , anyways im gonna call em again and have another fight with them

Wow Xnets must be a massive network with so many internal routers
That poor   packet must get lost before it breaks out to the Internet

Sad state of affairs

I use xnets aka Xpress network solutions, aka Xnet internet service?

Firstly lets make it clear, Xnets offers a service that I WANT and NEED even if it is crap at times!

I am always refering the service to my friends, family and business contacts. For this though I have been punished with countless late night and early morning callls from family using the service, whenever the service goes down, in fact at times I wonder why xnets isnt paying me for customer relations.. lol

As they say, no good deed goes unpunished.

Note though: I have in the past had the same bully tactics, when I mentioned my frustration with the service using 'a skype mood message', I was called and crapped on from above and told in so many words to 'find another service provider.' (By one of the owners) I drove to the offices and made peace with the owner and have been using the service since then in silent mode. (hulle se mos n toe bek is n heel bek)

The reason for this is.

1. I live in the Crags 25 km from Plett in the PE direction. We have no other alturnative provider offering a 'uncapped' service at similar rates. Telkom dail up anyone? puke... I would rather suffer on xnets that use Helkom dailup!

2. I work on the internet like 15h a day and cannot afford to be without internet.

3. Cellphone 3G/GPRS, EDGE is so expensive it is also unreliable in the area where I live so I cant go that route 24/7. (Although I do use 2gigs of Vodacom data every month as a backup to Xnets connection.)

4. I dont believe in commenting on forums etc using a fake name, so I put my name on all comments and instead of the service provider seeing, hey a client that is giving us feedback, I get slammed in the nuts.

Sadly, I must agree with other users on this forum, whenever I try to download large files things go wrong, I find its best to use my expensive 3G connection for large downloads. Even the Nokia music store crashes on xnets connection, oops :-( I also find that making skype calls over xnets is pointless. So use my 3G for this also. Mostly web browsing, email and text based IM chats work great on the uncapped connection.

Complaining about service delivery in South Africa will only gets you stomped on. I know because I recently took vodacom on and am still reeling from the stomp. So if you post a comment like this using your real name, be prepared to be kicked in the balls. .....simonB reaches for his ball box, lets hope it not to hard this time.

I must say that from what I can see over the last few years, xnets is trying to improve, its just a very slow process. Lets hope that this conversation that started negative, through open communication we can build something positive.

Rob and Herman, Please dont ban me for my comments.... Rather come and join the conversation and let us as a community build a better xnets service for all.
