Current rule of thumb is to never venture close to any of the airfields, unless you're in a group of 4 (or more) peeps and apply some form of tactical manoeuvering/engagement...otherwise it'll end up in a bloodbath. And stay away from the top of buildings. It makes you an easy target for bandits and guys that are skittish about snipers.
ddrd, the thing that i've found with the mosin is that you've gotta have a good system to push up that field of view and maintain solid fps. Obviously you'll need a stable connection and good latency as well, to make a scoped mosin really effective. Actually havn't had much luck in getting a decent M4 setup going and the last time I did, I had it all of 30 minutes before being murdered.
When I'm with a group of friends and we're travelling to a base/airfield, I set up my scoped mosin with the bipod and provide cover while the team scouts ahead. We generally don't shoot first ask questions later, but it seems that everybody else is only looking out for themselves.
Havn't played this week, but heard there was quite a bloodbath at one of the airfields (think Northeast) - something like 10 out of 13 players died in a head to head encounter.
As for maps, try this: http://dayzdb.com/map/chernarusplus
I've had the most success navitagting around with this map and it provides solid leads on equipment and supplies.
