Hi, does anyone know of an alternative to Steermouse or a free way to bind the side keys on a 3rd party generic mouse? The mouse does not have any special software as its a general generic mouse and the other alternative I have tried called bettertouchTool also does not work - I can bind button mouse 4 but not 5 as when button mouse 5 is pressed the alt-tab switcher comes up automatically preventing me from binding anything to that specific button.

I just need to be able to do full screen left and right move and press of mouse wheel to activate screenshot taking. Only those 3 buttons/actions that I am in need of.

Any ideas?

@phly maybe check out BetterTouchTool here https://folivora.ai/
I don't use it for a mouse but the trackpad, but it has mouse info in the app.
Worth a look, is pretty cheap.

I tried it out but it didn't work as expected. I am able to set mouse button 4 but not mouse button 5 because when you press mouse button 5 it defaults to tab view meaning the BTT app cannot pickup the button press and so cannot assign a function to it.

Perhaps change which button in the OS is assigned to Tab view, then when you press the mouse button it'll do nothing and you can edit it.

I tried to look for this - Lord knows I tried but I could not locate it anywhere - Its like a default inbuilt setting. I know my way through Mac OS but I did not find that option anywhere. I am open to be proven wrong

See if it was Windows I would have said look at the Registry but Mac, nope I don't know/

Haha i would rather deal with not finding an option on Mac than to deal with Windows. Between the forced updates, viruses and constant battles with dll's i would rather have my peace and avoid all the melodrama that comes packaged with Windows as an added bonus.

None of those worries for me on Windows 7, but I get your poin.
