Apple faces lawsuit over blocked Android messages

I don't actually understand, from the article, what was happening or not happening to the messages
 
Hmm, maybe she was expecting all her old messages to transfer over to her new phone. Doesn't apple restore all that sort of information when you upgrade to a new phone?

Sounds like user had iPhone 4, was using iMessage, then switched to Samsung Galaxy S5 and now no longer receives iMessage messages.

But if that is the case then I dont see how this is a big deal? iMessage is for Apple only. You cant iMessage to Android devices. That is why god blessed us with WhatsApp and Telegram. Why then was there no case like this brought forward when people switched from Blackberry to Android and they could not BBM anymore (before BBM became available for other platforms)? I think my feelings about Apple is pretty clear on this forum, but this seems a bit silly to me.

I think what happened in this case is that other iPhones still had her number registered as an iMessage number so they would automatically try to send messages to her as an iMessage rather than a SMS.
 
From my recollection the problem is this: Person A and Person B both use iPhones. Apple detects this and automatically changes the settings so all text messages between A and B go through iMessage, instead of as real SMS's. B switches to Android. A's phone is still set up to send all messages via iMessage, delivering them to iTunes, but with no client actively listening. So in essence, A can no longer send SMS's to B, unless they somehow convince the phone that iMessage is no longer the correct channel. Of course, there is no way to know this, as phone switches aren't always known to your whole contact list., and everyone that has you as a contact.
