Apple iPad prices in SA

So the baseline sells for $499 which adds up to R3500-00 and these guys double the markup. I dont expect Core group to be much cheaper so people are better off buying IPAD's overseas and in the unlikely event of your apple product dying, buy another one from overseas.
On a side note, dont ever buy from wantitall.

Well i have to disagree with you guys above. The MARKUP is not double, please guys understand business and respect any local price, including core.

What you dont know.

Grey importers probably buy @ retail prices or at premiums for products such as these.. so example the basic 16gb ipad.. costs 499usd someone in the states, which not to forget excludes "vat" so we can compare local exvat to US prices, to be more fair. Thats equal to R3700 (export/import exchange rate) in the US. Now if anyone of us had to import it we would have to pay shipping plus vat and import costs from the courier. Your initial cost at your desktop on the iPad 16gb will be aproximately R5400. thats including shipping and import taxes etc, worth it? i say wait for core.. they might suprise you. :erm:

btw, these grey" importers i would say probably make between 15-25% at most. depending on their "source" in the US.

It's only "grey" if the product isn't actually manufactured by the company. In this case, no one else except Apple makes the iPad, so saying they're "grey" importers is a false statement.

For an individual importing this only Custom Duties apply. So with overnight shipping (about 3-6 business days from the USA to SA) including the minimum price of $499 it's a total of $538.99, Import Customs Duty cost (It's usually around R40 but let's say R500 because we're feeling generous), I'd be paying roughly R4407.67 (which is roughly 33% less than the quoted price, so you're right, it's not a 50% markup ) today to have it in my hands within a week. I would actually then be able to afford the 64g model of for R6506.54, if I was willing to wait a couple of weeks for delivery and not have it delivered within a week. And this all from genuine Apple retailers, none of these so-called "grey" ones (actually got pricing from amazon.com)

I'm pretty sure more or less the same duties are applied to when a business imports bulk (which would save on shipping costs) but I might be mistaken. However, this country has a culture of "OMG, we're sooooooooooooo isolated from the world, and with the rand flucuating so much, OMG! We can't charge anything less than 50-100% markup or we'll be out of business" is BULL****. Profiteering and greed. That's where it's at in this country. Want to argue? Look at our dear leadership (both now and "tomorrows") and tell me I'm lying.

I really fail to grasp that importing products in bulk COSTS more to import including duties + vat that they want on top of their markup? I could phone 3 shipping companies right now (well, probably tomorrow or Monday?) and get quotes from all of them that would prove the more I ship (or import, for example via container) the better the shipping price I'd get. But no, greed is what drives this country... not proper business and competition. It's a "I want to nail as many people as possible for as much profit as possible because they don't have choice" type situation...

Howzit AcidRazor ... I must disagree. "Grey" is when an original product is imported and not bought through the local official channels, in essence, not allowing you a local warranty with the official channel. Although that still doesn't make the grey imports any cheaper, and I can't stand the pricing, but the terminology he used was correct, or at least that is the accepted terminology used in the industry. Regards, Itai

Well that's just the marketing of the industry wrt "Grey" products. Its not a cloned product so its authentic with paperwork/serial number. I don't own any apple products but if I wanted on the off chance in the future, I'd probably go the above route (what AcidRazor said).

Add one for me please.... Here the deal - I'll share in the shipping costs and give you some extra. Just PM me the details.

Grey or not, we're a rainbow nation after all....

Another classic example of the South African consumer being readied for daylight robbery. There is absolutely no justification for the prices being cited here.

Like many other commodities it would be better for the consumer to find it on the net and import it themselves. In fact the difference in price is almost half a ticket to London, is it not? :erm:

As a result several local online retailers are now importing iPads for customers who would rather pay a premium price than wait for it to land on South African shores.

In my experience you pay the premium when you buy Apple products in SA. Bought every single Apple product i have outside SA, and not once did I even pay close to the local prices.

I must say that I'm surprised the debate hasn't become "Who wants the iPad anyhow?"
That's my thought

And grey merely means it is imported parallel to the legitimate distributor. I am in electronics distribution, and it is a constant battle we face with the grey guys, who simply piggy back off the marketing and back up we provide, and just cut the prices on products where the demand is high.

Luckily we have trademarks and international protection.
