Apple iPhone 16e (formerly iPhone SE 2025)

Weekly poll: who is interested in the new Apple iPhone 16e?

This week saw the hotly-anticipated launch of the new iOS mid-ranger – though with a new starting price of $600/€700/ £600/₹60,000 (128GB storage), “mid-ranger” no longer sounds true. To be fair, this isn’t a new iPhone SE (the last one started at $430 for a 64GB phone).

This is the Apple iPhone 16e. It’s iPhone 16 hardware – a binned Apple A18 chip and just the 48MP main camera from the back – stuffed inside an iPhone 14-style body and using the same 6.1” 60Hz OLED display with a notched Face ID (Touch ID is gone from the phone).

The iPhone SE (2022) is no longer available from Apple, which is bad news for those who liked the SE for its size (and also for those who liked it for its price). Here is a size comparison table. In short, the iPhone 16e is the same size as the 16 and noticeably bigger than the SE and the (similarly deprecated) mini.

There are mid-range Android phones with high-refresh-rate displays, but (a) I don’t think they’re better displays, all things considered, and (b) they’re mid-range Android phones. It’s like bragging about the refresh rate on the dashboard display in a Kia Sorento. The 16e display also sports a throwback notch in lieu of the fancier, more playful, and at times cleverly useful dynamic island.

The iPhone 16e is an iPhone for people who don’t want to think much about their phone. But they do want an iPhone, not just any “whatever” phone. A just plain iPhone, with a good screen, good enough (and simple) camera, and great battery life. I think Apple nailed that with the iPhone 16e.

the big ugly old iphone style notch on a phone is a thing that deserved to die ..... the fact that its back ensures i would never ever look at purchasing that particular phone .... ever, because i had way more than enough of it on my Poco F1 and i'n ecstatic that my new (android) phone doesn't look like a retro piece of dog turd with a huge ugly notch
