Apple iPhone 16e pre-orders are now open

On Wednesday Apple introduced the iPhone 16e, which is its new entry level smartphone. Two days after the launch, the smartphone goes on pre-order in 59 countries and regions, including Australia, Canada, China, France, Germany, India, Japan, Malaysia, Mexico, South Korea, Türkiye, the UAE, the UK, and the US.

The iPhone 16e has a binned A18 chip, where the CPU is the same as the regular version, but the GPU has one fewer cores. It also comes with Apple's first in-house modem, the C1, and the phone supports satellite connectivity, Emergency SOS, Roadside Assistance, Messages, and Find My via Satellite.

I didn't even know that was a thing, so some crook can take your phone to the middle of the Karoo with no iPhones anywhere and you'll still be able to locate the device?

Yes, or if you get lost on a hike you can send an emergency text message and your location, but iirc that service is currently only available to Americans.

There is talk about SpaceX support but nothing official yet.

Apple kicked off pre-orders for its brand-new iPhone 16e today and the device was coincidentally spotted in a pair of certifications.

The 16e appeared on Geekbench with the iPhone 17,5 alias, managing 2,706 single-core and 7,942 multi-core scores. The binned A18 chip inside the 16e delivers a 17% drop in single-core performance compared to the iPhone 16, while the multi-core scores are almost equal.

No, there’s more to Find My than just lost/stolen tracking.

You can use the Find My app to send your location via satellite. It’s been a thing since the 14.

How to share your location from an iPhone via satellite - iPad Pilot News

We're entering an exciting new era of communications thanks to recent developments in satellite connectivity. Here we'll take a look at the satellite connectivity feature included with iPhone 14 and 15 models and how you can share your location on a cross-country flight from any altitude.

To use this feature, open the Find My app on any iPhone 14 or 15, and select the “Me” tab at the bottom right. You’ll then see an option called “My Location Via Satellite”. This feature will only work when you’re not connected to a cellular or Wi-Fi network, so for now, you’ll see an information screen.

To test this out, we took a Cessna 182 up to 5,500 feet and headed out on a short cross-country flight. Once we flew far enough away from the populated area of Cincinnati and lost cell coverage, the Satellite Location option was enabled in the Find My app. You’ll also see the letters SOS replace the cell coverage strength bars to the left of the battery status at the top of the screen.

After pressing the blue Send My Location button, you’ll see a status window at the of the screen with instructions on where to point your phone to connect to a satellite. We held the phone up in the front window for about a minute, and it then displayed a message that the location had been updated in the Find My app. Included with the confirmation message is a reminder that you can only update your location every 15 minutes, so the feature is essentially put on a timer to limit you to a max of 4 shares per hour.

Use Emergency SOS via satellite on your iPhone - Apple Support

With iPhone 14 or later, you can use Emergency SOS via satellite to text emergency services when you're off the grid with no cellular and Wi-Fi coverage.
