iPhone Air gains a SIM slot through impressive mod

The iPhone Air is the first iPhone sold as an eSIM-only version all over the world. But a new report from China shows a modified Air with a physical SIM slot next to the USB-C port. The information surrounding this project is bleak, but it was reportedly undertaken by an electronics store based in Shenzhen’s Huaqiangbei market.

The project required some clever space-saving solutions, like replacing the Air’s original Taptic Engine vibration motor with a much smaller unit that still retains basic haptic feedback. The gained space allowed the enthusiasts to connect a SIM card reader alongside the physical SIM slot, allowing the device to be fully functional.

Typical Apple - sell the world’s fastest phone and the kneecap it by not fixing their own software to make the most of it

I got a iPhone 16e as a company phone recently and yet it can’t still do multi apps (like 2 apps) to this day? But can the 17 pro max do this. I am not talking PIP ?

I was an iPhone guy and when the phone of mines 10 years gave up , got a cheap android - xiaomi was still newish then - as a stop gap - and that shitty phone could allow me to have two apps open at the same time.

Yes, it’s useful for me, I keep both WhatsApp and teams open at the same time. So yeah , my company iPhone is just collecting dust since I can access all my corp apps securely on my personal phone. Waiting to upgrade to the s26 ultra when it comes out soon.

——
Am now also using a Mac mini too. Was forced to install windows in a VM just to use powerBI. That works well. And excel on Mac doesn’t have the full power query functionality. So the windows VM PC does a great job.

Forgot to add - My partner wants to give me her new iPhone pro 17 max - which she just got for her upgrade. If it can do dual apps at the same time - I may consider it.

Nope, no multi apps on 17 Pro Max.

Sell the 17 Pro Max, get S26 Ultra + Accessories + Samsung Watch.

Was useless for me on Android anyway. Most devs don’t support micro sized windows.

Each to their own - I can't tell you the amount of times having dual app on my phone capability has helped especially when copying numbers (where copy/paste is not an option) and one app is secure (usually banking app or others).

My partner will LOL if I sell her new phone :) May just tell her to use the new one, sell the old pro max she has and I can use that money for the S26 ULTRA (with no other accessories) -- Garmin FTW!

In those cases I just take a screenshot. Systemwide OCR ftw! Even in my banking qpp I can take screenshots without issue. Also Apple watch ftw! Apple Pay, Whatsapp, Apple Music, customisable complications, unlocking my Mac, airplay, seemless Airpods audio switch over, quiet notifications, bitmapped screen for easy loyalty card barcode scanning etc etc.

At this point in the game, if someone prefers Android I recommend they go that way.

Some banking apps prevent screenshots. I experience that on my android. I need to install the banking app on the iPhone to see if that works.

One thing I love about the iPhone which the android does not currently do - translations of text messages. I receive a lot of them as I do a lot of things in Europe. Right now, I need to copy paste into Google translate. I can't take screenshots of the notifications shade so that also sucks .must try with iphone.

Regarding other things. I made a decision a decade ago, that my Garmin was always going to my health data repository so I will never change. Also I don't like distractions on my watch do despite being able to take calls on it , its disabled. I have music on it.

Also notifications except for 2 - my watch is silent always. I also prefer charging my watch every 10-12 days. I like my sleep stats.

Also hard Garmin pay on the watch in South Africa at least 2 years before apple pay arrived on the watches. Couldn't stop laughing internally when people were chuffed they could do that. Yeah welcome to the future.

I have a mac (with windows), windows PCs, NAS, iPad, Garmin. I made sure never to get locked into one ecosystem. And it's helped. Yeah, some issues sometimes , but OneDrive which is my cloud repository works well everywhere.

Oh and I used Apple Music on my Android Phone , even though I also have YTM and Amazon Music subs too. Apple Music is also the default music provider (because of their music quality: lossless, etc) on my Sonos speakers in two different houses.

So to the other post by @Tsepz_GP - I use the best all of world's as it suits me

Next job this year: to drop Google photos and iCloud cos prices are getting stupid and self host. I have enough capacity and backup nous never to lose anything. Immich is the contender

Oh, a EU icloud domiciled account can't use the live translations feature that Apple released late last year with their new airpods. EU rules on something - not GDPR

That wouldn't not be a problem for me as my iCloud accounts are ZA and UK based but my Sony's XMs are still rocking and when they finally die, I may buy those big Apple cans if I can use them with Android and other non Apple devices. Never did the research as yet.

A new market intelligence report shows that Apple dominated the best-selling smartphone rankings for 2025, and the base model iPhone 17 stands out for its position in the top 10.

iPhones filled seven of the top ten positions, with Samsung not making an entry until #5 …

Counterpoint Research published its latest market estimates. Since it’s measuring sales for the whole of 2025, it’s no surprise that it’s the iPhone 16 rather than 17 which comes out ahead.
Makes sense the battery life of the 17 still blows my mind even months later.

Same here, absolutely enjoying my 17 PM, it is interesting to me that despite all the focus on AI by many manufacturers last year, it’s Apple who take the crown, proving that AI is really not something most care about.
The Apple Intelligence mess didn’t even affect the iPhone 16 series sales, they continued to sell stronger than any other phones that were out for the full year.
The fact that the 17 Pro Max cracked the Top 5 with just 3.5 months of sales and completely outstripped the Galaxy S25 Ultra that had been in market for at least 10 months with lots of discounts and deals is also something to behold, truly insane.

Apple posts record Q1 earnings fueled by unprecedented iPhone demand

Apple announced its Q1,2026 fiscal quarter results, and it was headlined by the strongest iPhone quarter ever. While Apple calls it Q1, 2026, this fiscal quarter ended on December 27, 2025, aka the holiday period, which is traditionally Apple’s strongest quarter.

Total revenue reached $143.8 billion – up 16% from the same time last year, while net profits came in at just over $42 billion. The strong results were fueled by “unprecedented” demand for the iPhone. Apple reported its iPhone revenue reached $85.3 billion, which is an all-time high. The favorable result was largely driven by the iPhone 17 series, which has enjoyed great demand since its launch in September. Cupertino also now boasts 2.5 billion active devices.

The iPhone 17 is a brilliant phone, I love mine. But I still feel it's being let down by iOS26. iOS 18 on this would be a match made in heaven imo.
Agreed, much work needs to be done on iOS 26, I think it is mainly us enthusiasts who pick up on the bugs as it seems most people are quite happy, most of my friends and colleagues who got the 17 range haven’t complained yet I notice things like dropped frames here and there.

I think part of the issue is also certain apps, I have noticed the X app gets to a point sometimes where frames are dropped (seems to happen when updating the timeline), yet Instagram, Facebook and most other apps run wonderfully.

My main gripe is the slow keyboard. Whether in a 3rd party app or the iOS messaging app, it's so slow and laggy. How has iOS26 been out since September and they still haven't fixed this!?!
