Hey All,

I'm adamant that everyone who has bought a iPhone in South Africa before 30 Sep is entitled to a free case from Apple. They are doing it everywhere else in the world, why not here?

You need to get the "Case Progam" app from iTunes and then apply from within the app. This is to ensure that you can only ever get one case per iPhone, it verifies the IMEI number.

The problem however is that the app is not available in the SA app store. Also, even if you get the app (by using an international account) you can't set the shipping to South Africa.

I've spoken to the Core (the guys who one the iStores) and the CEO has emailed Apple Europe to find out what is going on. Hopefully we will have answers soon.

If you want to check out the details of the program you can see them here: http://www.apple.com/iphone/case-program/

Here is my view on the matter. When I buy a new "smart phone" costing me R 9 000 +. I do not want a free freaking cover to make it possible for my phone to keep signal. R 9 000 is a huge chunk of change to drop on a device with a obvious flaw and which the manufacturer tries to fix with a band aid.

I think the problem lies with the thousands who bought the stupid flawed freaking iPhone. I would've returned it. Cancel my contract due to the device not doing what it says on the box like my Little 8520. I opened the box inserted my sim and activated (all without sticking it into a damn pc and downloading a 90mb+ file ) BIS.

Free cover or NO free cover. It's a piece of crap. Well IMHO

Thanks.

Thanks for Trolling, we all appreciate the effort you're putting in!

But to clarify for people who actually have the iPhone 4 or are considering buying on:

The reception is great, I have a problem in the basement parking of my building but I always have.

I want a cover to protect the phone, and if I can get one for free them why shouldn't I? The rest of the world is doing it why shouldn't we?

Lol love the way criticism is instantly dismissed as trolling. Keep those fingers in your ears and your head in the ground.

Well derailing a thread by changing the subject is by definition trolling.

This thread is about the possibility of getting a free cover if you are an iPhone 4 owner, not about the relative merits of one device to another.

I'm more than open to criticism and good debate. If you think that South Africa should be excluded from the free case program voice your dissenting opinion. If you think that SA should be included post that. But, ultimately, if you own an iPhone 4 and want a free case phone Core on (011) 535 9000 and ask them why SA is excluded from the program.

I don't think they should be excluded from the free case program. Why does the phone need a free case? My phone didn't come with a case, previous versions of the iPhone didn't even come with a case.

I'd be more motivated to phone and ask Core what they are doing about enabling iTunes in the country before asking for a free case, that is unless the phone need the case to operate properly.

Free case for phones with glass screens is an awesome idea. More phones should come with them. If it weren't for the griffen case i bought for my 3G I would have needed a couple of screen replacements by now.

How does the cover affect the response of the touch screen? I know with my Desire I can't use anything other than my fingers to operate the screen I would imagine it's the same with the iPhone iPod touch.

It's not about needing a case, it's about wanting a case that I should get for free because apple is giving them away worldwide.

On the iTunes issue from my understanding the content is not available in iTunes because the owners of the Content have not licensed Apple to sell that content in SA, for music and movies at least. This is because the local subsidiaries of these companies will not allow it.

As to games I understand that there is a rating process that must be completed before a game can be sold in SA. This rating process costs about R5000 per game and for games that are funded by micro payments it's just not a workable business model for publishers to have them rated. Instead of taking liability for selling unregistered games in SA Apple just doesn't sell any games through iTunes.

But be that as it may it's out of Core's hands, although they are probably the best people to contact locally.

These iTunes reasons may be wrong, I don't really know it's just what I was told.

I don't plan on getting a cover with front protection, but I've seen them and apparently they do work. I did buy a pack of screen protectors for R275 and these work very nicely. They are not too shiny and repel grease quite well, but they will basically only protects vs scratching

Did anybody manage to get an official reply on the iPhone Case situation?
My iPhone 4 does not lose signal strength no matter how I grip it, but I want the free case please, I don't need it to fix the signal issue I know, but I would like one on the free offer.
The Apple bumper looks very nice with the buttons built in :-)

Yeah, I called Core, I spoke to Trish there and she spoke to David the CEO. He has emailed Apple Europe and will come back to me by tomorrow hopefully. I'll keep this thread informed.

Thanks schpat :D

Highly doubt Apple would give South Africa free cases. Keep in mind - all countries that can apply for a free case actually have official Apple presence (offices and Apple Store etc.) Apple doesn't exist in South Africa - only importers/distributors here, not Apple themselves... Thus, no free cases for us. I got my iPhone 4 in Aus and applied for a case there anyways - he he ;)
Then again, I've tried the death grip on my iPhone and have not been able to lose signal, even in low coverage areas :) So why bother with a free case?

Why are you people carrying on like this for a case that you did not earn, work for, buy or otherwise deserve? Just because it was promised, so now you absolutely have to have it? It was never promised in order to offer protection for your phone, had you not been promised one you would have bought it anyway, not so? So go and buy one already then!

Some people need to grow up and loose this sense of entitlement they have. Sheez!

Hey guys, we (vodacom store) today received stock of iphone 4 bumpers that we are supposed to give out to anyone that buys a iphone 4 from now on, you can choose from these different colours: black, black and oh yes black! ha lol
