Apple iPhone 5 disappointment

sand_man, I agree 100%. The jailbreaking developer community is showing where iOS should be going. Apple should take the best from that and bring it in as standard features.

By live icons do you mean something like a weather app that displays the current conditions or a calendar app that displays the current date?

100%. A photo icon that is in fact a slideshow of your camera roll, a facebook icon that is in fact your current facebook profile pic, a camera icon that displays a live feed of what your camera currently see's, a map icon that displays your current location. All these would be incredibly simple to implement. Yes, they might suck resources (battery, ram and cpu) so include the option to switch live icons off.

The sad part is Apple are hell bent on closing the loophole. Why would you want to alienate a community that brings value to your offering (piracy aside)?

Ok. Putting the issue of system resources aside - though maybe we shouldn't because performance is one thing that Apple holds above all else - do you really think it's worth it? A map on such a tiny icon? A minuscule slide show? Some things obviously do lend themselves to it like the calendar and weather apps (which of course are currently doing so) but not everything.

I sometimes feel that just because you could do something it doesn't mean you always should.

Another major bugbear, the 12 app per folder limitation. WTF is up with that??? So if you got 14 games you have to either leave 2 on the springboard or create a 2nd games folder....????

Look at a jailbreak app called Springtomize. A light weight 506kb app that brings 100's of different permutations pertaining to various elements of the UI. That's it, a single app that offers the end user the sort of flexibility they currently can only dream of. Yes it's currently a bit buggy but refine it and incorporate it in iOS7.

If you want 14 games in a folder get an iPhone 5 :p

EDIT - but make it a white one - then you wont have to fear so much about your dreaded scuff-gate :)

Well to do that will need a bit more work on the multitasking support, and as you said that would suck the iPhone's battery to hell and gone, esp seeing that the phone is kinda small so limits the size of said battery.

Don't know why people always think piracy when you talk jailbreak esp seeing that you can do just that without even going there. Personally I love Jailbreaking for the Open source Stuff like VLC.

The lack of multitasking due to a poor battery is actually a poor excuse. Motorola managed to fit a 3,300 mAh battery into a phone that is no thicker, and not much bigger, than an iPhone 5.

If i could change just one thing of iOS in a non-drastic but allow customization it wouldnt be to add widgets out right but rather make the lock screen a bit more customizable by allowing users to select what apps to load into it. so u see whats relevant to you/interact with it as you wish.

Think about how you interact with your phone and how often you want access to the entire phone, if you could tweet, checkin/4sq, change time tracking, take a pic(done with iOS6), clear msgs etc from a lock screen life would be simpler.. heck it could save battery life too(you dont need to launch entire app). Yes it introduces a new screen but really it's like the windows login screen.. it sucks. Andoid does achieves similar with their widgets screen... basically i guess i'm saying as a hud/dashboard like interface is needed.

You see this coming through with the Ubuntu mobile interface(a few weeks later i see the brilliance of it). The current model of finding the app in grid and then using it is old, kinda set in much like use of the start menu :p Sure its needed but not as a primary UI

Agreed. But at the very least a photo icon that mirrors your lockscreen or wallpaper. Just something to give it a unique feel. Where's the live clock??!!! I mean basic stuff. How awesome would a camera icon be that reflects the cameras current live feed?

As for resources I do believe of all the OS iOS has the most wiggle room. If ever there is an iOS that is frugal on resources it's iOS.

What's the new folder limit? 16? Awesome!! :D

I saw a white iPhone 5 at Melrose iStore on the 15th December that was more scuffed than the black one. I promise you I am telling the truth. It was more or less then and there that I made the decision to sell my upgrade.

Well to do that will need a bit more work on the multitasking support, and as you said that would suck the iPhone's battery to hell and gone, esp seeing that the phone is kinda small so limits the size of said battery.

I have Quasar on my iPad3. I also have edited/deleted unnecessary launchdaemons and installed killbackground which closes all running or suspended apps. Battery life is close to the 10 hours specified but being able to type a reply on Tapatalk while remotely viewing surveillance cameras at my business, while at the same time and on the same page having a skype conversation going on with my mate in OZ, it's bloody lovely. Yes, Quasar is buggy and yes it hammers CPU and GPU but as a feature it is HUGE!! Apple needs to refine it and launch it with the forthcoming iterations of the iPad and iPad mini.

Agreed, Apple want to get back in the game? They had better work out how to manufacturer that 5000mAh battery that charges from 0% to 100% in under 30 minutes and doesn't degrade over time.

LOL, before I started reading my mind was going sarcastic mode "great, another atomic battery...." :)

I must admit it does sound promising, not like em atomic ones that is in use today already(Batteries that last up to 15 years on a single "charge") by the military. The only problem with em atomic ones, is disposal. Dropping dead "radioactive" goods into a dustbin is kind of not a good idea.

Theres a live clock at the top but I don't think it would be too much to have the icon reflect the current time on that one screen.

truly awesome :p

Surprised that the white one scuffs more though. TBH even if scuffing wasnt an issue I'd still use a case. I've had a few mishaps where phones had slid from my pocket and I was lucky to have not lost them.

It's quite funny reading the last 20 comments. From what I understand, iOS users are looking for MORE, whether changing theme colour, widgets, live icons, specific dedicated apps etc etc...

And this is the weird thing, someone said earlier that they don't want iOS to be like Android but Android DOES all of the above with no piracy and\or no jailbreaking. Additionally, all the comments refer to CHOICE, people want choice as to whether they have access to this app or that option.

Wouldn't it be strange if Apple turned around one day and went the Android model, users set the limits....very strange. I think iOS would really take it to Android then.

Jailbreaking and customising iOS must be a false rumour ...
What you on about now?? I have 2 jailbroken iPads on iOS5. I'm also in the minority; and aside from SBSettings (which iOS desperately needs some equivalent of) and piracy, it doesn't really add any value to my life. All those great apps you see, it distracts from the main focus of tablets which should obviously being making a killer homescreen.

The sad part is Apple are hell bent on closing the loophole. Why would you want to alienate a community that brings value to your offering (piracy aside)?

Well, you can't really bring piracy aside. It's a biggie. How do they keep getting the best apps first if they can't ensure a relatively safe haven for developers, and that means making at least an ostensible stance against piracy. Then there's the issue of warranties of course.

Mm no I don't really care about any of that; but what I definitely want more of is functionality and seamless workflow, and cutting edge design and animation throughout.

Battery is one thing, speed is another. I'm constantly having to swipe close apps on my SGS because they background and end up clogging up the ram.

I'd say that 5-10 seconds of having to occasionally swipe close apps is a reasonable compromise for true multitasking. Better than not being given the option at all. What's the point in having 1GB+ RAM if its only being used by one app at a time?

.

That's my point, you want CHOICE!!

I can open a document on my iphone/ipad, make an adjustment and then immediately open the document on my laptop and continue from there - how much more seamless can you get? What sort of additional functionality are you looking for?

If the treacle-like user interface of my N7 running the latest version of android is what I can expect if Apple goes the same route then count me out - by all means make it possible but give me the option of enabling it.

Not choice necessarily; improvements. Faster, prettier, more functional, better typography, more modern appearance, some sweet new animations, less grungy faux-leather textures. I'm happy to leave that to the design boffins at Apple esp Jony Ive; but whatever they come up with must be a substantive evolution. I don't feel that given the choice of designing it myself, I could do a better job than they could; in fact I know for a certainty that I couldn't.

When the phone slows down to the point of freezing whenever I touch on a link in Chrome and I have to hold down the home button for 20 unresponsive seconds to bring up my multitasking list and close my other apps, that doesn't make me feel empowered and 'true multitasky', it makes me feel like hammering it on a cement floor.

But that's what comes with openness , the community wants the same thing so the community builds it for other people. Hence launchers, widgets etc....

Why wait for Apple?! You want to let Apple dictate what you want and when you want it?

You just asked Apple for choice?!
