Apple iPhone 5 disappointment

Why are you always be such a snotty little brat? It was a friendly enough post.

Yes ok so I'm asking you in a friendly manner then, why have you not bought an iphone yet?

Instead of shrugging of the question by calling me names which dont apply to me since Ive earned everything I own myself. why not just answer my question is it so hard to answer?

Currently I'm pretty happy with my SGS on 4.2.5 as of last night. Runs like a dream. I'll see when my contract comes due again though; the CellC deals on iPhones are pretty tempting. But I just get whatever works, and chances of getting Android or iOS are always about 50/50. This morning I was mulling over swapping my iPad for a Galaxy Nexus. Decided against it though because well... yeah. I love my iPad too much.

.........I'm a blackberry AND Apple fanboy blah blah blah....

You on the other hand, as I've said before, are a sheep as well. Just a sheep on another farm masquerading as a freedom fighter for consumer rights as if high end Android or Windows mobile phones are any less profitable than an iPhone. The problem those manufacturers have is market dilution by putting out cheap handsets which is eating into their profitability.

You think? The s3 sells for around R5500 and the iphone 5 around R8500....somehow i don't think samsung are making that much profit per s3 as Apple are making per iphone 5.Theres a whopping R3000 difference in price per phone and we all know Apple gets its parts the cheapest since it buys huge volumes.

Then again as JStrike has admitted thats part of the appeal for ifans(the premium inflated price).

Blindly praising a certain brand is certainly a form of fanboyism but so is blindly criticising another because you happened to stumble upon something else that works for you, which is the category you fall under. It is a thinly veiled attempt at creating the impression that you're impartial when the truth is Nobody, and I mean nobody is impartial.

I'm not COMPLETELY impartial.I'll openly admit I try to be as impartial as possible but I have a soft spot for Sony since at one point in time they were producing gems like the t68i,t610 , I'll also be the first to admit when the competition has made something better like right now Sony's high end like the xperia s/t are nice but for a few reasons phones like the s3,htc one x,iphone 5 and nokia lumia 920 trump it in my book.

The new xperia z should be pretty damn good though if initial reports are anything to go by as long as Sony can release it before the competition catches up.Truth be told I judge each device on its own merit irrespective of brand or operating system.I don't "blindly" criticize anything since I have actually owned devices that I criticize.

You wont find me criticizing a mac pc,because I have never owned one.Unlike many here I don't go by what Ive read in some stupid blog or biased journos impressions in an article.

Back on to the profitability issue... If you're mad because Apple is highly profitable, which the last quarter again proved, in their market segment then I'm afraid you have some serious issues.

The world has serious issues, while we argue about how many billions the select few made there are literally billions of people starving out there yet you celebrate a few making billions just because they service our needs,I'm not a hippy and release Apple is entitled to make its billions for the products and innovation they bring to us just like every other big corp moving the world forward but at the same time if the divide need not be that huge between the haves and have nots then yes it will be a small win for the poor.

Slowing profits are not good for consumers at all; it means companies also slow down on R&D and competition. Thinner margins means worse business.

To a point, how much of Apples 100's of billions are used on R&D?
Same can be said for microsoft,Samsung,Google and the other big boys.

For smaller corps your argument holds completely valid though.

Do want!!!

So go buy it already and stop with your iwet dreams already. Why are you not buying your precious iphones yet?
The S3 sells for R5500 through proper channels? No chance in hell.

The S3 sells for about R7500 while the Galaxy Tab 2 10.1 sells for R6500 as opposed to R8500 for an iPhone 5 and R6500 for an iPad 4 WiFi + Cellular.

Furthermore the iOS devices are made of better more expensive materials.

Anyway, I don't hide my love of the iPhone because I think it's the best out there by some distance but I own no other Apple products although I plan on getting one of the iPad releases this year or the Surface Pro which I believe is a better buy if you actually want to get some work done.

Furthermore, I'm not celebrating the select few making billions because it is the very consumer you're fighting for putting the money in their pockets.

Sense. It makes none.

First you imply that "train wreck" can't "continue" and say that it rather defines "stop". But then you allude to Apple's falling stock price - which implies "continue"...and not "stop" so you are contradicting your previous assertion.

That was intentional.

Yeah the ipad is a good product in the tablet class, hard to beat currently, especially the hardware.
The Cell C iphone deals bring my greatest gripe with their phones down to a minimum which is the inflated price. On the Cell C deal the iphone 5 is actually cheaper than the Cell C equivalent s3 deals. When are you due for upgrade?

Next Feb only :(. MrsC got her Lumia 610 on upgrade just a couple months back then it took a drink in the swimming pool courtesy of our 2 year old son, so she's back to her candybar Nokia. I'll try and buy her an iPhone actually to replace it soon; she deserves one, bless her.

There are many other proper channels where you can get it at that price, the cheapest I have seen a iphone 5 though is R8000 so yes your wrong on that front there is still at best a R2500 difference between the two.As for the ipad I have always agreed its a very competitively priced product especially for the quality of hardware you get,its Apple finest product IMO and they dont make mega profits on it as they themselves have admitted.

Furthermore the iOS devices are made of better more expensive materials.

The ipad and iphone 4s maybe but the iphone 5 build quality is questionable when it comes to scratch resistance and complaints of chipping etc. but even so i cant see an iphone 5 materials costing that much more then a s3 materials but hey why are we even arguing here almost everybody in the know knows that Apple makes more profit per iphone than anyone else do a quick google and enlighten yourself...the information is out there if you need to find it.

Yeah I'm waiting for proper ultra book hybrids that can replace both tablets and PC's to launch later this year.

The S3 was launched in SA 6 months ago so you are hardly comparing apples with apples

Personally I buy my tech from carriers or official stores because that is the best barometer of pricing and I'm yet to see any store offer the S3 for less than R7500.

CaCell and the like are in a bidding war with each other so it doesn't surprise me that they would offer it that cheap. You also have to consider middle man greed when it comes to Apple products due to the supposed exclusivity factor and therefore you're unlikely to see CaCell sell an iPhone for that much.

I'm kinda hoping the next release of iPhone is a major overhaul/release including iOS. If you think about the iPhone hasn't hasn't changed too much beyond hardware upgrades and changes and while i like my iPhone4S and it's build quality.. when i look at the awesomeness of Android & Samsung S3 I kinda get an itch to switch over to something else.

If it was my upgrade cycle time with the current options i'd just wait for the S5 (S3 > year old, Korean think 4 is bad luck so not sure it will be called S4) because the iPhone 5 hasnt really impressed me much. Don't get me wrong.. I like the iOS walled in garden (will get an Andriod for work phone & fun but prefer consumer gadgets with less viral and other problems) but really.. nothing fantastical interface wise has happen since its come out which makes interface feel a bit dated, and the hardware is like meh..

krycor, that's how I also feel. Too much micro-evolution and not enough macro-evolution. Better and better hardware running basically the same OS. Things happen faster and text is clearer but the whole thing is just too familiar now. I want Apple to come forth with much more next time. I hope the negative market sentiment forces Apple to make braver larger strides ... else we'll see another overconfident RIM nose dive ("It has always worked for us." ... splat!)

Can any of you tell me how Android has changed over the years? It's still the same widgets and icons as has always been. Is it getting too familiar as well?

Apple is not going to overhaul iOS anytime soon so those asking for the Android bells and whistles should just buy an Android instead. To me it seems that people want Apple hardware but Android software.

Not going to happen.

No, because that simple icons and widgets can change a phone's look in a big way: http://mycolorscreen.com/?os=android

Also this doesn't even cover the aspect that Android by design is modular so you always have the option to install custom Launchers for example SPB Shell 3D and so on. Hell its the only Mobile OS that can look like the opther OS's if you so wish.(iOS /WP)

This idea that Apple must radically change the basic feel of the iOS ui is just wrongheaded and endemic of the sort of 'Apple is dying because I'm bored of my life' thinking that pervades the tech world. Stability is a key way by which they maintain customer loyalty. It is the reason that the iphone5 was still so recognisably an iPhone even though they made some pretty drastic changes to it - the iPhone look is a brand in itself. Ui changes need to be handled in a delicate and either obvious (like folders), or optional (like swipe gestures), way - or people like MrsC who is currently livid at windows 8's changes - get upset and lose precious brand loyalty.

But that doesn't mean iOS isn't getting antiquated, and in need of some fundamental work - it really id, and i can list a lot of areas now. Just that it needs to be handled in a proper manner, and not necessarily changing the basic look of it, which is quite superficial. The changes would become apparent through extended use. So my feeling is, even if they improved it drastically, the same people would fail to be impressed because all they can see is icon grids and no custom launchers.

You do know that the vast majority of users don't go to such lengths. They use the phone in factory specification and just install apps.

I find this iOS needs a major overhaul really interesting and whilst I agree with cerebus that there areas that need to be addressed, I've posted about it before, I really don't think that iOS needs drastic changes.

They haven't changed OSX fundamentally in 11 years and 8 major releases...and people generally love the fact that it's the same thing that works the same way but has more features and enhancements.

iOS I suspect will be exactly the same. The core system will remain the same for a great many years still with new features and enhancements added to it.

Fix what is broken, enhance what isn't. No need to rebuild the entire car because the gearbox has a problem.

Nothing wrong with Windows 8, actually they only made one mistake, they removed choice. I would say 99% of the people complaining would have praised the OS if they gave you an option to install the ModernUI from the start. Hell I would even go so far to say that 80% of the people bitching about ModernUI would most probably have installed it and praise it for all its worth. People do not like freedom of choice to be removed.

As for Apple, I would say simple theme support would have gone a long way. Nothing drastic, just simple color and custom Icons would have done the trick. Maybe something like old MIUI.

Yes I would agree some of that is kind of extreme and most users would settle for less drastic changes like maybe a launcher or so on, but I can add that the number of widget sales tells me that most do not keep their phones as stock, and even when some do, you will have to look long and hard to get 2 phones that looks exactly the same because of the arrangements of Widgets vs icons.

Hell even Windows Phone's color blocks looks more personal than iOS's rows of icons.

That said, something that did put me off iOS was its lack of sharing data within itself. and don't tell me creating a local "icloud" on the device is impossible or even a security risk.

My biggest gripe with iOS is that it depends on the developer whether a file can be used with another app. And if it is, then it creates a copy of the file in that app's folder. So data is duplicated, and you start worrying about version control.

That is just unproductive.

Why doesn't every app with the relevant capabilities have equal access to any file stored anywhere on your device? That same one file, without making copies of it.

Android is much closer to a normal computer than either iOS or WP8. iOS and WP8 have their merits (I really like my iPad) but this issue, to me, makes me want to pull my hair out! It is called easy 'file management', and we all know how to do it since Windows 3.1. (Intended a little bit of sarcasm there)

Perhaps I am missing something... I am open for correction...

Although I know what problem you are referring to I never actually find myself having that problem.

The closest I get to it is opening links in Safari that could have been opened natively by its own App. Vodio links are a good example.

So that brings me back to Apple building the device for a purpose, a purpose which is NOT being a computer and therefore not being designed for the same kind of tasks with the same kind of complexities.

Android on the other hand try to be as close as possible to a touchscreen based computer without being one.

Windows doesn't even try to do a touchscreen properly, it just slaps the same OS into a tablet and carries on with the same old broken logic.

*****

Note that I'm not saying you are wrong and Apple is right...just that I can see where the fundamental concept comes from, and it doesn't necessarily work for all users but it does cater for most.

And the majority are really the ones that matter.

Most non-geeks can't operate a file system to save their lives, so keeping it away from them is a good thing.
