Nonsense. A charging mat like the Lumia is doing is just another bulkier form of charging cable imo. It's sexy but it doesnt' solve any problems. There's no reason you can't put a Lightning connector on a mat like that though - would just need to get licensing for it.

Anyway Apple's vision is this:

The reason they didn't go with micro USB has nothing to do with it being temperamental or easy to damage. It has everything to do with the $$ Apple makes from not sharing a adapter.

So some of your accessories might not work even with the overpriced adapter.

It makes basically no money for Apple. So no, it would not be a motivating factor
 
Apple never had to change their adapter in the first place, never mind switch to micro-usb. They are in that privileged position where their chargers are pretty much ubiquitous - maybe not as much as micro-usb but certainly more than Samsung's rip-off proprietary chargers, for instance.

What they decided to do was to improve on some of the design flaws of the 30-pin such as its non-reversibility, relative inefficiency and large real estate.

A propriety iDevice connector having absolutely no licensing costs from Apple... patented too I am sure...
For all those 3rd party adapter and cable and dock etc manufacturers to just adopt without charge...
Absolutely free to use for all and sundry.

Achieving vendor lock-in is a much more plausible reason.
When combing it with it being reversible, it is an easy decision.

Incidentally, the first dock connector was chosen to technical reasons to do with available channels in USB at the time. The ubiquity that then happened probably pleased them though

So a mat on the end of a cable is more complicated ? You are still going to need all the bits and pieces for the other Apple and non-apple devices, so why not another little wall cable with a flat bit for the new iPhone5 then ? Same difference perhaps... ?

One [small] brick with different cables - perfect for travelling since each of the cables also serves other purposes.

Presumably it will just be another cable that plugs into the same power supply.
 
The Unique addaptor has nothing to do with money made from it and everything to do with market control.

Apple licence out the use of said adaptor and in so doing can take people to court or ban products that damage their rep. Example of someone like Bose sell an "iPhone 5" alarm clock that does not work, Apple can then force them via the court to rectify the problem or remove its license rights.

So in short Apple is doing it so that it can force OEM's to comply to standards, much the same that they do with the App market. They do this so that when you, the brain dead end user, buy a radio with an iPhone 5 plug, you know it will fit your iPhone 5 that you own.

Sure they make some money out of propriatry connectors but thats not the reason for it as this is minimal if you compare money out of connectors/licenses vs phone/app sales.
