Apple launch event next week, new iPhone expected

I use both and while android phones are better all round its hard to deny that for some reason the quality of apps on the iOS eco-system are much better. Why don't developers make better apps for android?

/waits for JStrike to play the fragmentation card...

Traditionally more money is made on iOS apps than droid.

I'm not sure about droid phones being better overall though. I've had things like the phone function, SMS and even gmail fail on me with droid. Never had that with iPhone

I recently got an S4 after being an avid Apple user for the last 3-4 years.

The flexibility associated with Android is refreshing and especially for someone like me who likes to theme my device.

What's completely undoable on an iPhone without jailbreak is par for the course on Android. Stuff like custom icon packs and fonts, custom launchers where you can influence how folders look, icon size, dock setups, animations etc etc etc It's prolific and we not even talking about the benefits of rooting and the weird and wonderful world of custom roms!!

The quality of apps on Android platform is quite surprising too. Splashtop, Teamviewer, Dropbox, Skype, Twitter and Facebook are apps I've used extensively on both platforms and I prefer them on Android. Size of the screens has a lot to do with it though but there's absolutely no problem with the quality of how the apps have been written for Android...

What I will say is there is a smoothness in the Apple UI which 4.2.2 hasn't quite replicated. Bloody close but not there yet. I understand a custom rom is a different animal in this regard. Will flash and revert...

iOS 7 is a massive step in the right direction but if Apple really want to close the gap they need to endorse the jailbreak and the jailbreak community and start appreciating what they bring to the table and to iOS...

It's because Apple developers have to spend $99 a year just to put out apps on the app store. No developer who has to pay that much just to put out apps is going to make his apps free or void of in-app purchases. They need to charge for it, else they're just wasting their time and running at a loss.

PS: nice post, sandman.

I can understand why. Most people that do end up with iPhones have more disposable income vs Android. This argument might change in the future with cheaper iPhones but I doubt it, as their main market will still be there. Don't see everyone flocking over to Apple over night.

iPhones only target the rich or pretend to be rich. Android on the other had have no clear borders, you can have people with R800 or R12 000 Android's , and every thing in between. People with cheap phones are less likely to part with their money.

The funny part is the same markets segments dictate why a lot of Android applications suffer from quality as well. "Poor" people are less fussy than the rich.

Can say the same for iPhone, and the times it did fail I had to reboot my Phone. Also remember trading this article from Forbes, but none of them where as bad as my Windows XP desktop so I learned to ignore the crashes I did have.

I've had several android devices right from the days of the original Galaxy S1 and Xperia X10 on android 1.6 and have never experienced that.

Out of curiosity, which apps in specific did you find better on iOS than Android?

Just in general, yes there are a few games like clash of clans and plants vs zombies 2 not available on android but its just a general feeling that there are more quality apps on IOS.

So I guess I'm saying the quantity of quality apps on IOS is better than the quantity of quality apps on android and that what baffles me is that it definitely is possible to make even better quality apps on android like many developers have shown so why then do so many quality app developers not make android versions.
