Apple Maps lose direction with users

Apple maps:
Boldly go where Apple allow you to go.

Google maps:
Boldly go where YOU want to go

Apple did it on purpose to avoid a patent war with Google.

Google's patent states "an application that assist the user to search for a destination, calculate the route from the user's current location, based on parameters (fastest travel time, shortest route, means of travel, etc.) set by the user and guide the user to the destination by use of a graphical interface, voice guidance and text directions."

Apple Maps do not do that and therefore do not infringe.

:D

Instant gratification much? I'm surprised there have been so many errors in the new maps but this is a brand new map using a brand new data set (polygons vs tiles) that is going to take time to get right. It has taken Google 7 years to get to this point. With crowd sourcing en-masse Apple should be able to fix most of this with incremental updates. They can technically push out fixes instantaneously because it only goes to their servers. It isn't something you have to download, unless you search for that in your app.

Don't be apologizing on apples behalf, I'm sure they will get around to doing it themselves after recovering from the launch party. There is nothing wrong with the data, as it is sourced from Tom Tom and works fine on its devices. The problem lies with apples software that is supposed to render the data.

For those that are interested, map making is more than just taking data and displaying it on your device.

Some good read re this see How TomTom maps are made

They have to take the data from all the sources like as TomTom maps and get it to work on their C3 application. all this while using the POI data from Yelp.com and other sources.

Apple is also known to use data from http://www.openstreetmap.org/ As noted with their iPhoto app so I am sure they probably using this for map data as well.

Oh and just FYI, Google also sourced data from TomTom as well as other partners, not all of it is self generated.

TL;DR Its not about getting the data, its about merging all of it and getting something that is accurate and usable and all this takes time.

LOL, joke is that is the London underground notice board so was meant for train station maps. Google maps use to show this info and iOS6 need 3rd party apps that I am sure is still in development for said service.

But its now spreading as a Apple faulty maps joke.

I have used Apple Maps a few times since the upgrade

Actual Experiences so far
a) 1st thing I did was look up my house and it was exactly where Google said it was a year ago. Trouble is thats 2 houses (120m) from where it actually is. I reported it to Google about a year or so ago and nothing happened. I did it again a few months and they fixed it. So Google Maps is now correct. It seems that certain City Map services are wrong

Apple have it wrong exactly as Google had it wrong. I have reported it. Lets see how long it takes to fix

b) I had to go somewhere and just for fun I used Apple Maps (instead of my Car SATNAV
- Plotted a better route than my bloody Car SATNAV.

- Maps were very clean and fresh and easier to read than Googles. Flip side was that they were a litle sparse with shops etc.

All in all a fun argument for the fanboys to fight about.

The simple fact is that
a) Apple had to change because their own Google Maps was always going to be behind Androids (see turn by turn being witheld etc.)

b) They had to change and go through a patchy spot. Crowdsourcing will fix some problems. Their devs will fix others

c) Google have had a few iterations.

The only question in my mind is "Did Apple under the circumstances do a reasonable 1st attempt?
I dont know. I dont use public transport much except when I travel to the UK, France etc.. When I do I use their specialised Apps anyway

Dude that sarcasm just went over your head.

Yeah I thought that might have been the case. Tbh, I find it really hard to pick up on sarcasm over the internet. Not only because the tone is hard to get across, but also because there are a lot of retards online that it could be just as plausible that the person seriously thinks like that.

Anyways, my apologies.

In my eyes the biggest fault of Apple isn't that their Map App is below par, but that they haven't approved Google Maps. It shows their attitude towards their customers, rather have monopoly over something than give their customers choice and access to the best possible services.

Yep, no denying the beauty, functionality and general experience of their ecosystem, but,if i'm not given choice for something I bought then I have a problem with that. "Jailbreak" comes to mind,am I a prisoner to their ways?Seems so.

Has Google submitted a maps app? I can't find any confirmation from google.

I did a search for maps and navigation and got thousands of results for an iPad alone, including Google Earth, so I'm really not sure how we're being denied access to alternatives.
