Apple Newbie: Queries

I took out the iphone 5 on the straight up 200 contract on the 26th of Jan. Today when i check my balance it said i have usage of R75??? Apparently i had depleted my data bundle, and some application downloaded 111mb and this caused the additonal R75 charge.

Before i get any more surprises could you guys please inform me what and how to disable on my iphone (updates etc) so that such occurrences dont happen in the future.

Another thing apparently when the phone got activated, an international SMS was sent to 44 7786205094. Do you guys know anything about this?

Also is there a way for me to ensure that i never incur any additional charges (specifically data related) above my contract bundle?

Download an app called Data Usage from the app store. You can set it to notify you when your data bundle is almost finished. It will also show you on the app icon how much data has been used.

Your phone won't update over the air unless you confirm for it to do so.

I can only imagine you downloaded some Apps that were larger than you expected.

Ok thanks for confirming that. Yes i think its as you said, i did use an app that clearly killed me on data!

Why does the imessage icon not appear then if i have it activated?
