iPhone 5: why no NFC?

Apple has turned its back on Near Field Communication technology with the iPhone 5′s lack of a NFC chip, but Apple don’t see the need for the chip just yet

Once again apple have it wrong (don't need a bigger screen, don't need 4g).

NFC has been adopted by every other phone manufacturer on the planet, but apple know better.

Don't worry, they'll put it in the iphone 6 and the faithful will then suddenly claim "well it's because it's needed now and wasn't before ololololololololol" and have instant orgasms about how innovative the whole thing is.

NFC has been around for 8 years, and has failed to be adopted.
Bluetooth 4.0 will win out over NFC.

You can quote me on that prediction

You see, this indeed doesn't make sense to the rational and reasonable people like you and me. You need to take a few sips of the cool-aid first before you start spewwing nonsense like:

"I don't need NFC. Apple doesn't have it so therefor it MUST be a bad thing. Back to Angry Birds and taking photos of my food in Instagram!"

Apple soon going to realize they missed a beat by leaving out NFC

Completely agree with NFC failure.

How so?
What use is NFC in our current environment?
Banking, access cards... maybe a few playful apps, all of which is not available.
SB has NFC cards but for the low end market.

So why is there a need for NFC?

No it will not. NFC requires very close proximity and no configuration. How does Bluetooth4.0 with a 100m connection radius and pairing configuration fit the bill ?

Almost all POS systems sold for the last few years are all NFC capable. It just needs the buy-in from the consumer end to become viable. With Samsung, HTC, Nokia, Blackberry, LG, Sony, etc... all producing Smartphones with NFC (smartphone is required for NFC) it if very fast becoming a reality.

Apple did not include NFC because it is not clear the technology solves any current problem, marketing chief Phil Schiller told AllThingsD on Wednesday.

Pfft .. Apple hasn't even taken the plunge with bluetooth file transfer on the iPhone yet so they're clearly not the tech leaders they paint themselves to be.

Bluetooth 4.0 allows for the close proximity, no configuration stuff that NFC allows.

But I assume people know that already, as they are busy commenting on a thread about NFC... :)

Well, in a year we can revisit this moment and see who was right :)

My personal opinion is that NFC does not figure into apple's passport plans. With passport, apple will be able to skim commision on all transactions and gain information on customer spending habits. NFC allows them none of this.

NFC is very old technology, the only thing it can be useful in the very near future will be access control in the workplace or functions.

Nokia used PTT tech in the majority of their Symbian devices, never really took off. Not all technologies benefit us.

There will be another iPhone in another 12 months, I still doubt the NFC uptake would be very good.

That being said, all it takes is one app to go viral and use NFC as a core functionality to prove Apple wrong, but right now, Apple is safe.

Giving you the benefit of the doubt here as I know nothing about BT4. But this would then nessesetate all vedors to change their POS to accomodate BT4?

While waiting for the "tap-to-pay" thing to kick in, you can have a lot of fun with NFC.

Just google "tecTiles"
