I wonder how long they will carry on about retina, the quality seems to get worse each time.
The ip4 was great at the time, now its just a tiny mediocre screen.

I can't answer for Rocket-Boy, but personally I won't be surprised if they did improve it retroactively because with some iStuff users, the products get better every time they talk about it.

1) What exactly is getting worse about the quality? The iPhone 4 to iPhone5 displays from a pure quality standpoint made a big qualitative jump. The retina-ness of the screens stayed exactly the same. Or are you talking about the PPI of their other retina products, e.g. the iPad3/4 and the Macbook?
2) The ip4 screen is tiny by today's standards. By other standards it's still an extremely good panel.
3) Retina is a pretty effective marketing term, and it denotes an entire approach to creating a higher resolution display. As long as they're upscaling their displays, I don't expect the term to disappear from their marketing material.

The first "new ipad"'s screen have this funny yellow colour to them. You get used to it, but poor production quality.

What are you talking about my screen's colours are perfect? Was it a batch issue? If it was it is hardly indicative of anything - just a bad run; that happens. Did they sort it out or what?

I think it was the first batch that came to SA, got myself one and it was very yellow instead of white. They said it was the glue drying or something. It did become more white (but still yellowish compared to iphone) but I haven't followed up with the idiots at core because they are... well... idiots.

+1 on core idiots. They made the grievous error of sending me a survey a couple of days ago
 
great stuff = more super expensive stuff that you don't need, but will buy in any case.
 
My suggestion would be a iFleshlight so that some forum members can actually make love to their Apple products instead of just walking around with iBoners.

I am pretty sure ****canning Forstall and handing design to Sir Jonny was the start of the UI revamp.
I agree its stale.
Not a reason to move platforms but enough to cause newbies to choose something else

BTW - As an aside I setup someones Galaxy Note 2 the other day.
It had Android 4.1.
I have also recently set up the smaller Lumina 620.

Not digging at anyone but 1st impressions were good on the 620 and not wonderful on Android 4.1
I only had the basics to setup.
But setting up Google Mail for Business on the Native Mail (not the GMail App) didnt go well
Because I had a domain other than @gmail.com it expected all kinds of other info
Its possible I missed a button and I only tried for a few minutes

I also played with the Google Apps on Android. They certainly didnt feel better than their iOS versions.

Not fighting with Fandroids. Just goes to show that arguing why something is better from within the 'best' paradigm is impossible.

I stand by my contention. Right now there is plenty reason to like all the major platforms.
There isnt any overpowering reason to move (in any direction)
 
I kinda think that one thing that will NEVER change and in my view should never change is the simple tile-based homescreen. I had a greater appreciation for it recently actually because after using a Galaxy for a long time and getting an iPod Touch I realized that Android's icons are deliberately flattened because they need to scale infinitely - which creates a designer dilemma and results in a smallish, minimalistic iconography i.e.

So even on a 1080p screen you aren't getting the IMPRESSION of heightened detail - only some greater crispness.

The strict standardisation of iOS means that designers can create a small handful of icons specifically for the retina size, they end up looking deep and detailed.

You could argue that they should add in the ability for custom widgets or customizable icons, but then the App Store would end up resembling the Play Store's mishmash of launchers, widgets, icon packs and so on that crowd out real apps.

Where the refreshing of iOS is needed, it isn't in those aspects. There are other areas that are desperately in need of attention though like the notifications area and the multitasking.
