Jannie, why the cellular data download limit on Apple devices?

My guess is idiot protection.
Can you imagine being whacked with a roaming bill for R120,000 for a spftware update?

Its amazing how many people get caught.
I know of 3 that have had huge bills (more than R30k one over R100k)
Ok one was an idiot. The other 2 are smart enough.
And still they screwed up

I have no problem with a setting to override as long as the default setting is to not allow it.
If they are going to allow override I wouldnt mind a requirement to enter a PIN like they do with Restricted stuff

So it's on a failover via your router? Doesn't your router use it as normal adsl then? I mean, is the cap on the side of cellc or apple?

Was not at home when I got the update message this morning. At home I have no limits on my router. One can wait and do the update when at a WiFi connection, but what if one needs a large app immediately and do not have WiFi at hand (or enough data on the cellphone to use it as hotspot)? Why I believe Apple should give the user the ability to set his/her own limit, even with a PIN if needed.

Have gone that route before but it always had a negative effect on my devices ... slower, more battery drain, etc. The device loses that Apple sleekness/smoothness ... and then I can just as well go Android.

I think in the beginning it was more to do with protecting the network, and something ATT requested as part of their exclusivity deal - these days though I shudder to think of a bill some unsuspecting owner might get if their LTE got away from them.

That said there are no restrictions on data usage outside of the app store, nor are there any restrictions when using an iOS device as a hotspot - perhaps apple assumes these are features only the more advanced users would use - but I do agree it's time they were lifted, after sufficiently warning the owners of the possible consequences.

I'll grant that it could definitely be set as an option in Settings. It does seem like rather a small gripe for an entire mobile operating system though.
