I agree with you to an extent.
I agree the size of the tiles dont need change
I do think that more of them could become 'live' (like the calendar one)

I was a total die hard apple guy. Imac, mac book pro, iPad and iPhone. They have already lost me on the phone since the iphone 5 is a piece of crap. I hope they come out with some "great things". Steve is gone and all of a sudden they start releasing crap.

I recently upgraded to the iPhone 5. I did consider (as an experiment) buying the Nexus 4 but acquisition was a little too painful. I may still try it if I see one over seas.
But back to the iPhone.
I think it's fine. It's not an earth shattering improvement over the 4s but it is faster, lighter and thinner and it still feels solid.
Functionally it does what I need, e apps are excellent, the experience is smooth and consistent.
Now to the question I have asked a few times
- assume you are already in an ecosystem, either iOS, android, WP
- what reason is there for anyone to move from any platform to another? No emotive statements. Just real things that will affect you significantly on a very regular basis. Then ask yourself if they justify moving.
If you argue from our own paradigm you will also think you are right.
Frankly I don't think anyone is hugely ahead.
Stack up the 3 phone platforms I have mentioned and ask if anyone does anything in such a beneficial way that would justify moving?
Windows phone would be the most obvious one to move away from because of the lack of apps.
BUT I have used them and they seem like great devices. M/s will get the developers on boa,r&d so why move from your preferred platform.

Well perhaps, I guess. I don't see it as very crucial. All that information can be accessed in notifications without turning the homescreen into a blinking lightshow. I remember Jacob Nielsen was highly critical of Windows 8's live tiles because the effect was disorienting when you have all these flashing bits of information to focus on rather than simple static icons. They broke something that worked because they were afraid that they had to do something different to compete. There really are more fundamental issues for iOS - such as fixing Maps, making iCloud properly competitive, making multitasking a better experience, and bringing the visual design up to a much higher standard.
And no BeVonk, those don't include filesystem access or 'more oppenness' whatever that means. It certainly isn't making iOS into Android. Even Google conceded that the best way to securitize Chrome OS was to sandbox their browser tabs/apps. NO OS level decision is compromise-free.

More open ... examples: Download as much as I want on 3G and not be told that I MUST use a wifi connection. Install other keyboards of my choice.
Why these draconian restrictions? Why act like my nanny when it comes to MY data?

Must use WiFi - Most of these choices are covered by Settings where you can enable 3G use for Itunes, iCloud Docs,
But am sure there are cases where they still insist on WiFi.
Has never hurt me though.
Other restrictions - I could live with the odd relaxation (keyboards may be an example)
But we dont need file systems, side loading etc. Its not iOS.
We dont need relaxations that cause things not to work

Yea, I guess that would be a small matter to implement. Any idea why they have it?
This is a no-brainer and extends to all default apps. What I don't want to see happening though is this 'open with' dialog box that Android currently forces on you every time you update swiftkey or whatever. Leave it in Settings, but give us the choice.
Some restrictions are logical and others aren't. Restricting widgets and custom themes has a strong logical basis. I'd guess even restricting 3g overuse has a strong security basis to prevent 3rd party apps from suddenly depleting data limits, but I'd agree on the option of removing it.
It isn't nannying against your freedom, it's obviously intended for protection of users against OOB charges - the potential for an LTE connection to suddenly download a 500mb update in half an hour without you realizing is quite real. And out of bundle charges are insane. But yeah I reckon I agree in principle, curating users' removal of 3g limits should be in there.
But still there are far better areas to focus on for improving iOS. Here is a good list to start with.

As for the 3G limit thing, I have no problem with it. What I would like though is to be able to buy apps for later download on WiFi.
This 3G limit thing caught me this morning. Got message on my iPad Mini that an update is available for it. 68 MB. Not possible to download over my inserted 3G sim connection = must use WiFi. I can use my phone as hotspot, but it shouldn't be necessary. Not for 68 MB. For 200 MB plus I can start to understand (maybe). Why not rather provide the user to set his/her own limit in settings? That way the OOB shark cannot be fed.

Do you actually not have wifi at home bevonk? I'm a little puzzled why you wouldn't actually rather download this stuff from wifi which is unlimited.
I have WiFi at home yes, but all connected to 3G/HSPA. Not on ADSL (yet) ... recently moved in ... and I'm not sure I really want to do that. I have plenty of 3G/HSPA data for the things I need to do. I hate the idea of paying Telkom money to (1) get a line, and (2) activate ADSL. R300/month for nothing (no data yet).
Jannie, why the cellular data download limit on Apple devices?

So it's on a failover via your router? Doesn't your router use it as normal adsl then? I mean, is the cap on the side of cellc or apple?
