Apple Silicon M5

I was about to buy the Anker USB C Plug, 543 (65W II) PIQ 3.0 and GaN the other night but ended up cancelling the order after reading the unfavourable, but all too familiar, reviews on Amazon.
Realised I'd forgotten my charger so sent ahead and ordered it anyway.

Options for a small charger that didn't have the [lethal] UK plug were limited.

Since we're apparently on the topic of chargers. I travel with this:

and then I have a Romoss 40000mah 65W brick as backup.

Got one of these off a local European Amazon while there:

Came with a cable. Worked out to about R1400.

It folds. It tells you how much each port outputs in Watts.

Luke Miani shared his take (incl benchmarks) of the M5 MacBook Pro, he was highly impressed with it.

Every year he is impressed, no, twice a year as Apple usually release the M(i) vanilla and later the M(i) Pro/Max.

The OLED Macbook will be the one to be impressed by. The standard pro liquid retina screen has many dimming zones though so the contrast ratio is very good anyway.

Do you actually watch his videos or are you just shooting your month off?

As that is not true, he is actually a hard bloke to please & will and have criticize Apple devices rather "harshly" at times.

Yup, sad to say I have seen quite a few. Wished I could have those hours back.

Not sure why you're so rude, is he like your cousin or crush or something?

Every new Mac will beat the one before it. Sometimes by 5% more than previous generation in increase terms, sometimes not.

Not able to have a reasonable conversion or you're in "trolling mode" I see.

Cool man, as you were.

I'm not in trolling mode. The guy waffles. He's a youtuber who waffles for a living.

So tell me, what value has Luke Miani ever provided? Name some things which have affected you, what great wisdom did this sage grant you?

Pass, not remotely interested with “arguing” with someone pig-headed.

We can’t even agree on the fact of “impressed every year vs seldom impressed” = lost cause.

No point wasting my time when your objectively is out the window.

Frankly we never agree on anything if memory serves.

Mea culpa

Looks like a nice little charger - my problem is an ever increasing number of devices I need to charge I'm travelling at the moment and my four ports are already occupied. :)

Practically I find myself rarely charging more than two devices at the same time and if I need to I just use the power brick or charge off the Mac while it's charging. The art of the charge

Being new to Apple a few years ago his videos on the G4 Titanium and his unboxing of a mint condition 2007 Macbook Pro was really great and allowed me to see how far ahead Apple was even back then, especially with design. His ecosystem videos also made me see the value in going all in even if I have to buy some devices secondhand (the ones I use still work to this day). I also enjoyed his M* series benchmarks with older Intel and even Wintel laptops. It made me see how far ahead Apple was and still is with eg. efficiency. Also after trying to drink myself to death the same year I moved to Apple I stopped drinking and his videos amongst many others helped me get through the withdrawals. Some of his videos and choices I don't agree with but I also found value and enjoyed many of them.

People should be impressed. Getting performance increases like this should be commended.

I suppose there are a whole host of users who are going to find this, arguably impressive, M5 chip valuable, but I’m not one of them.

Since Apple switched to their own silicone the only thing that has made me contemplate an upgrade is damage to my existing hardware.

I think for many an upgrade is when you absolutely have to and that usually involves hardware failure or a real need to reduce time spent waiting for things to process. Saving a couple minutes here or there isn't going to move the needle imho.

The performance gains have been incredible in a very short period of time. It'll be interesting to see how they keep it up once fabrication process size starts hitting a wall, if ever (they keep getting smaller and smaller).

Dunno, for me it was when my ex's Macbook Pro didn't receive security updates anymore while the Windows counterpart did (it's 5 years major OS, 7 years security).

The Macbook Airs though have mostly decent value, just again, I think any laptop I'll get I'll want to use in 10 years (still use my Wootbook from 2016/17 I think, performance is fine, battery life is 3h with dedicated GPU), and with how Apple is locking down the stuff it will become e-waste in 7 years while good chance I'll put Linux on the other laptops.

Battery life side, we're getting to the point that most are hitting 5h+, "normal" usage hitting 7 hours, and performance for either one is good. It's actually nice that whatever you pick, it ends up being good, just pricing is getting higher :(

We can't compare it to Apple's ARM chips since we don't know how long Apple will support them. Even the M1 does support Metal 4 they wouldn't have been able to do that with Intel https://developer.apple.com/metal/Metal-Feature-Set-Tables.pdf

That's cute. I get 18h battery life.
