I bought the Apple TV 4K 2017 version in early 2021. Unfortunately, with the latest update, I can't access FaceTime or Zoom, and I also don't have a Thread router Nor can I use homepods as tv speakers

Erm my much older 1080p version can use HomePods as speakers so you are doing something wrong.

Can’t comment on the rest…never made sense to me anyway since it doesn’t have a camera. Would only make sense in a boardroom setup.

HomePods are Thread routers as well.

I should have clarified that it cannot perform this function (excerpt from the Apple website):

"Using HDMI ARC or eARC with your Apple TV 4K enables it to receive high-quality audio from a compatible TV and play that audio through your HomePod or HomePod mini speakers.

Requirements:
- Apple TV 4K (2nd generation or newer)
- HomePod or HomePod mini speakers
- A TV that supports HDMI ARC or eARC"

this would allow you to connect your playstation to the homepods

To be frank, I primarily use my Apple TV as a home hub , for viewing photos and for AirPlay of Zoom meetings. as The Nvidia shield has better codec support and the ability to skip ads on YouTube It is the primary device I use. I don't own a HomePod because Siri often has trouble understanding me on my phone.

I agree that I probably won't use the Apple TV for FaceTime, but it will come in handy for Zoom webinars and enjoying content on the big screen. Currently, I have to AirPlay it to the TV, which involves using another device. I understand your point about older models receiving software updates, my point was that not all the features are available. And I do concede that a soundbar would likely offer superior audio quality, but it is nice to have the option of using homepods, especially if they allow it to be used as rear speakers in the future.

The Apple TV can skip YouTube ads as well for free. Just use Yattee with an Invidio.us instance. Using Infuse codec support will also not be that much better on the Nvidia shield.
 
Just buy an LG upper level tv, it comes with Apple Tv as part of the software package.

If you currently possess a functional but budget tv or a non-smart TV, opting for a device like Apple TV is a more cost-effective choice than investing in a new TV, particularly a “upper level” LG model.

But you realise that adds things like an extra row of icons, video previews, redesigned Siri interface, redesign the control centre etc?

Plus, you’ll need to see if iOS updates are actually the same across all devices or generations. iPhone is different with every phone - so quite possible.

iOS updates aren’t going to magically add AV1 support , 8K or any hardware that comes out in those 10 years. Hell, took them close to 5 years to support YouTube 4K and they can’t even support some of the latest Netflix features.

So yea - it can quite easily make a difference as when to buy the correct hardware in the hope that something in those support years is actually functional

Let me understand this - you have the latest iOS and you can’t s as access FaceTime ? So they’ve definitely done the same as with phones, where you aren’t actually sure what you’re getting on each model.

Well on Apple's website it says that this new facetime for Apple tv is on for 2nd and 3rd gen 4k apple tv's. a 2017 model is 1st gen.
 
Actually - I have an Apple TV 4K 2nd generation and they launched HDR10+ in iOS 16 . Prime Video supports it right, but guess what - it’s only available on 1 of the 4 models it was released on

So tvOS17 runs different on his, mine and BSB? And he seems to think that all those years support are going to benefit him?

The iPhone 4 could run FaceTime in 2010 or something with the limited hardware available at the time. The 2017 model runs the A10X and is more powerful than the iPhone 7.

There’s no reason for it to be excluded - and it just begs the question of what else is going to be excluded ?

Well, limited Netflix compared to every other device. My 4 year old smart TV has better Netflix implementation

But my main point is that you feel ‘10 years of updates’ are going to future proof an Apple TV when they don’t even have TVoS that run the same on devices & can’t implement the latest features in apps like YouTube or Netflix ?

I’m not even mentioning the hardware changes.

Actually, Apple was one of the pioneering companies to offer software updates for their latest mobile OS on older models. Prior to that you would be stuck with the version that came out with your system. I recall purchasing a phone with Windows Mobile 5 and being unable to upgrade to version 6. Similarly, LG TVs running WebOS and their soundbars do not receive updates to newer versions when new models are released.

PS. While Windows allowed you to upgrade your PC to the latest versions as long as you met the minimum specs, they charged you for the upgrade.

That’s great.

I’m unsure if true, but sounds decent? Though this conversation as about the Apple TV and specifically that you can buy at it anytime because of a decade worth of updates.

Like I said :

a) The updates and software can’t upgrade hardware, meaning that it’s very probable an ATV is going to be obsolete regardless.

b) Although the same software version is rolled out, it’s actually different on each version of the Apple TV. Even now, 4 flavours of Apple TV get tvOS 17 - but all have different features.

That’s terrible

My 4 year old Samsung TV received a number of updates over the years actually. Even the apps are updated often enough. In such an old TV, I get all the Netflix features. And flipping to Prime, I get dynamic HDR.

The Apple can’t do any of the above. But as BSB says ‘it’s adequate for his needs’
