Apple versus Adobe

I am sorry to offend any flash lovers but flash has been the bane of my existence. Cant wait for html5. I hope adobe tanks and they can take their software with them. Long live OSX. Long live Apple.

How hard would it be for Apple to get behind an open source project like GIMP in a big way, polish it up, and then just give it to all their users?

Or, as I've said before, they just buy Adobe.

Meh, it's a good thing. Flash is terrible. I hate it with a passion. Adobe is behaving like a spoilt child now. If Apple doesn't want to implement flash support on their devices then they don't have to.

Go apple i say!

That would be awesome!

These machines are purchased and used, more than any other category, by creative teams. Designers, copywriters, Web design, advertising agencies.

I do believe this is a stereotype which no longer holds true. I'm willing to bet you that more Mac are sold to general computer users these days than to the design crowds. Yes, this group is still very relevant but I do not believe this is the biggest consumer group of these products.

This article should be in Die Son or something ;) More speculative than the next iPhone specs...

The battle over Flash has been brewing since Apple released the original iPhone back in 2006.
Or even June 29, 2007. ;)

I don't think it follows that if there were no adobe on mac that users would migrate with the software to PC, or instead just move to other mac software alternatives.

Adobe need Apple a whole lot more than Apple need Adobe.

Developers are increasingly flocking to Apple, even those that don't particularly like the way Apple is managing the App Store. They know its the one place that they can actually make money. Every other platform pales in comparison.

WWDC sold out in 8 days this year, down from three weeks(?) last year - and there aren't even any mac sessions planned.

What a bull article.......Apple is entitled to choose who they allow on their platform.......and they have chosen to exclude Adobe for a reason - to protect their customers and their products. Worried that Adobe would exclude OSX from their next CS ? I say bull, firstly they would be cutting their own noses off, and secondly, if users really wanted to use their software, then they could operate them from bootcamp - and it would run better from a Apple computer rather than from a BSOD PC ,and their annoying popups, and virus ***. Who needs Adobe and flash anyway ? My iPad and iPhone run perfectly without it.

Apple are getting way too big for their boots. The only thing of use they churn out these days is the iPod.

This is a pretty important point... Flash on the Apple mobile platform is dead. And that means that it is not a factor in the lives of millions of users and a significant section of the mobile web. If your mobile website doesn't support iPhone/iPad, then it may as well not exist. It will not get anything besides trivial amounts of traffic.

Flash on the mac is far from dead - crappy, but not dead. Apple is actively working with Abobe to make it better. And the same applies to the rest of the Adobe suite. Apple and Adobe both want it there.

If you want to develop for mac or iPhone/iPad, you need a mac and you might as well use the apple tools.

Cheap africa

Adobe has not considered lowering the prices of their products for the poor Africa...

Should we feel sorry for them?

Please take 5 minutes and compare what the average consumer pays to Amazon for Adobe software, and we are are asked to pay here.

The never ending story...

Its pretty clear that Apple is past the iPod and and is only milking the last bit of that product cycle. iPad sales are already eclipsing mac sales and appears to heading to eclipse the iPhone - all within a couple of months. This new platform is turning out to be a lot more successful than the iPod and will probably sell an order of magnitude more units.

Are there any general consumers who buy adobe products? I can't justify the cost and use the alternatives. The built in PDF functionality on OS X is one of the big draws.

Now I am not a flash fan myself, but it does serve it purpose. But it is the opening statement of the article that sums up the whole problem perfectly.
Although far less glamorous and nowhere near as adored by the general populace...
See that? That is apple's claim to fame - right there. Is that the de facto benchmark of what is considered to be the pinnacle of technology? Why bother with flexibility, usefulness, or in this case open platforms when you can have smugness in the form of glamor and adoration.

I have said it before and I will say it again - apple makes fantastic products. Without them we would see a lot less innovation all round, the latest release of Ubuntu is a good example of what apple can cause. This is the way in which they enrich the experiences non-apple users have purely by being competitive and forcing other to keep up.

Sadly their biggest downfall is their appletude. It limits their abilities to be seen as a serious and competitive platform, this is because somehow they got a big head. Maybe it is just the charisma of their leader causing it, maybe they are taking their fanbois to their head - the opening statement seems to hint at that. Lets hope they stop this rotten appletude and get back to being the competitive company they once were.

Erm... Apple is the standard for music players - no matter what some have to say about the Cowan - they are also the standard for smart phones, and they are now also the standard for touch pads. The own the biggest chunk of profitability in the laptop and PC market. They are very nearly the highest market cap company in the US.

Which competitor exactly do they need to catch up to?

Don't agree with this fully ... Android is picking up quite quickly .. from 1% a year ago to 9% now in Market share ... Apple has 14% with iPhone ... although not sure on iPad stats ... wonder what will happen with Android tablets?

Edit: And my comment has nothing to do with the flash argument ... just saying android is catching up and developers can make a bucketload here too
