Apple Watch is official

So effectively, mimicking an online purchase?

Well, remember there are different ways to do an online purchase. In south africa there is basically 3 ways to do it.

Card not present - This means the card number, cvv and expiry is used in the transaction, and nothing else to authenticate the transaction (the SA banks are being forced to move away from this)

3DSecure - Same as card not present, but extra security is added by means of a one time pin. More secure, and this is where the banks are being forced to move from the above type.

AMT - This is new. Authenticated Mobile Transaction. This is a card not present transaction, but with PIN present. Your ATM pin is used to authenticate the transaction as you would at POS.

I would assume that they are implementing CNP. Not sure what authentication type they use, and by authentication type I mean something that is recognized by the bank. Don't think our banks will by into the whole fingerprint thing. Bio-metrics is not high on our banks lists of priority.

Lets move this discussion to the wallet topic, I'll requote it there

That dial controller will break.
The next one will come out with something else.

Yeh, I mainly use my gear 2 as a notification center. Not much as else. O, and health tracking. The Gear 2 isn't what a smartwatch is supposed to be either. Android Wear is getting closer to it. Gear 2 is too proprietary so there aren't too many developers for it.

Well, if I can pair the Watch with a bluetooth headset and use it in the gym for audio, without the iPhone needing to be in my pocket, and it synced with the iPhone's audio for keeping track of things like bookmarks, and I come out of the gym and my health data has been thoroughly tracked (with sensors that actually work) and I can get some decent assistance on my workout progress, that's one very strong use for me as I gym most days of the week. And if it means I wouldn't have to use the 5.5" iPhone's screen as much for small notifications that's also very useful. I really like the idea - I would have liked the Gear2 if it had been better executed as well.

The apple watch can't track calories burned in the gym if you are using weights or machines for resistance training. It's only useful as a calorie tracker for cardio.

Wait, you already have an Apple watch? :p
So much assumption on actual workability.

Also, anyone worked out what the battery life is supposed to be yet?

Maybe the Gear S will be better, but the apps are too limiting imo.

Guys you're missing something!!

You could just get your buddy to WALKIE TALKIE his music from his watch to your watch, problem solved, no phone needed.

You notice that I said IF before that whole spiel right? It's not an assumption on anything, it's hopefulness that they can get something that does these things I'd like it to.

Also, anyone worked out what the battery life is supposed to be yet?
There's no news on that. I'm going with a worst case scenario of 1 day per charge.

Them not mentioning it should be an indication that it's going to suck. They were quick enough to talk about battery life on the phones though...

I'm willing to bet it might be slightly less than that, otherwise Cook would have said something at least about a full day with normal use...

I am sorry but I don't get this thing. You have to keep your phone in your pocket anyway to make calls. Why does anyone need it? It doesn't matter if it looks cool or not, there needs to be some functionality on it that makes it worthwhile to spend R4k+.

I have the Sony Smartwatch 2 (which works with any Android phone, costs +- R1700 ) and here is what i do with it:

1. Notifications (Calls,Emails,Whatsapps, Facebook etc). It's got full colour screen so you see full emails, full photos etc. I can also respond to the notifications on the watch itself (although not something i do often).

2. Fitness Tracking. This is probably where i think the biggest market shakeup will occur with the Apple Watch. All these Fitbit, Garmin, TomTom, Nike stuff you get these days. Both Android and Apple smartwatches is going to kill it. I had a Garmin GPS watch with which i run, cycle and track all my speeds/cadence/heartrate/distance with. Now i use my smartwatch to do all of that AND use my favorite tracking services (i.e. Strava/Endomondo etc) AND have it do live tracking via Phone AND display whatever i want it to display on my watch (i.e. my current distance + speed + altitude, all coming from my phone of course).

Ironically the price of the top end Garmin GPS watches are easily R5k+ , yet it does less than a standard smartwatch + phone combo with the right combination of apps.

3. Controlling various apps. I use streaming music services and audible audio books while driving, which is not always controllable with bluetooth handsfree kits. I can now control them from my watch in various ways. I can control my camera on my phone too, and can redefine the term "selfie" ;-) . I can also use navigation via the smartwatch , there is a map app , but getting text notifications from Google Maps to turn left/right works quite well too.

4. And probably most important of all : See the time, date, weather and whatever else i want to see with customizable watch faces. It's amusing that even though we all have this on our phones, you don't end up looking at it if you have to fish out your phone out of your pocket everytime.

I'd say if you got one of these phablet phones or even just a pretty big phone or tablet, the watch can solve alot of the discomfort ;)

Anyway, initially i also went "this was rather silly to get, i don't think i will use this as much as i thought" . Now i am getting wayeee to used to simply lifting my hand to check a new whatsapp/email and ignoring it ;) .

It also comes in handy in meetings when you don't want to look too obvious about reading things on your phone (can for example read Reddit RSS etc posts on the watch).

My watch lasts about 3 days before i need to charge. It's water resistant and display works quite well in bright sunlight.

So i don't expect anything less from Apple's Watch. Since all these watches are OS locked, except i think the Pebble, the Apple Watch will probably take the entire iphone market...which is a big market to have such exclusivity in. Apple is going to make money out of this either way.
