Apple's next-gen iPhone

Apple on Monday is expected to unveil a next-generation iPhone and possibly provide a glimpse at long-absent chief executive Steve Jobs as it kicks off a software developers conference here.

And hopefully Apple will announce iPhone OS3 is ready for download. :)

The third-generation iPhone is expected to have improved processor, camera and video capabilities and to allow users to run multiple applications simultaneously.
Nice work! It seems they are now catching up to the Nokia N70 (launched in 2005).

Really?..

Or maybe the N70 is just old generation and the iPhone is miles better...

Lets see now...
improved processor - N70 had that.
camera and video capabilities - N70 had that.
allow users to run multiple applications simultaneously - N70 had that.

Yup - seems like they are pretty much catching up to the N70 :p

What processor did the N70 have?
what type of camera did the N70 have?

The iphone CAN run multiple applications, just not 3rd party ones, yet...

low-cost iPhone - yeah right! heard THAT one before...

The N70 only ran at 220MHz, hardly a speed demon by any stretch of the imagination. Windows Mobile phones were already up to 400MHz by then, even though WM can make anything feel slow :P

Even the new N97 "only" runs at 434 MHz, while the very first iPhone ran at 400MHz. Right now I'm just hoping Apple puts some daylight between the iPhone and the Nokias for speed.

Fair enough - the N70 did not have the greatest CPU ever but is was an "improved processor" at the time. So that's why I said they are catching up to the N70.

Keep in kind that modern versions on Symbian (V9+) needs very little CPU power to run fast. Other smartphones OSes like the ones from Apple and Microsoft needs a lot more do perform the same.

The iPhone is much more capable than the N70, I mean look at the App catalogue. For every feature that the N70 has, the iPhone has 10 more. Can the N70 display PDF's? Email rich html? Play 3d games?

You are missing the point - obviously the iPhone is much better than the N70. For starters it has the best interface around (for the moment that is).

The only thing I was pointing out is that some of the "new features" the iPhone V3 comes with has been around for a long time on other phones.

We all know that.... but its not "catching" up to the N70 in the slightest....

The N70 is an old generation phone compared to the iPhone, but a considerable margin.

And apple at least are providing these features to older iPhone users, rather than other manufacturers who will release a new model with the new features instead.

Very valid point. Although Apple's strange, delayed roll-out of features boggles the mind, at least it can be loaded onto the old hardware.

Morks and ginggs have been running OS3 on their iPhones for a while and rave about it. I suspect I might just reorder my current fav. list (Magic->Storm->iPhone) to a new list (Magic->iPhone->Storm), although the mechanical feedback on the Storm is really handy.

So does this new OS3 change the 2megepixel fixed focus camera on the old phones into 3.2megapixel auto focus cameras ?

So Nokia used the word 'improved' first and Apple is therefore 'catching' up because they now also use it. But of a weak argument, don't you think? ;)

Actually, I upgraded my first IBM PC from 4.77MHz 8088 to 8MHz V20, so Nokia better watch it. I already had an "improved processor" in 1984! By 2005, when they launched the N70, they were already 21 years late in catching up!

So who has the inside scoop on this, i am due for a upgrade next month but would hate to get the current one if the new one would be on Vodacoms price list soon.... :o
