Aramex global shopper

Aramex charge R195 shipping for 500g. You have to accept that.
The post office is cheaper but it does take a lot longer to get to you - if at all.

Say you did use the post office to deliver your parcel. Once your delivery is at your local post office, you then encounter this new thing they have to fill their coffers:
The post office is charging R25 for every unregistered international packet/envelope the postman won't deliver to your postbox - which seems to be literally everything. They call it customs tax, which is ridiculous as we all know anything under R500 should attract no customs duty.
Gone are the days of happily buying a couple of cellphone covers for a buck each with free postage from China. Now it's free postage from China with R25 SAPO duty added on.

Don't worry, I heard from April 2018 that R24 handling fee changes to R48 handling fee per package. Waiting 4 months then paying R48...I'd rather use AGS.

Wait..... WHAT..!? Where the fudge is this coming from? That's bloody ridiculous.....

Post Office is almost insolvent. Parcel strike made many of us join Aramex Global Shopper as parcels were not being delivered or being stolen. Years later they still in desperate trouble, hence we, the public, being used to drag them back from the abyss.

Don't have proof of this, only hear say. That said, post-office price updates probably are in April
That would be a bloody disaster especially at the current snail mail speed I'll probably only be getting a bunch of packages after that. The R24 clearance fee is already nonsense.

You won't find proof. Not even the Post Office knows, what the Post Office is gonna charge. They probably just get an update from GuptaMail to tell them what the new charges are for the term....

Is this their response to the inconsistent duty charges?

Well....

On my items on which I paid 0 customs, I found their values were super low from origin, even though the value I uploaded was much higher. Makes me wonder...

Tho I was lucky.

I received the same message after complaining. They inflated my goods at 5 times more than the actual value

It is. I did not comment as it seems slightly, well, off.
Origins is their term for the shipping addresses in other countries.
There is no way the last two Google minis would have been incorrectly declared by the sellers so I don't believe that explanation at all.

Me too.It makes no sense that the same product from the same origin and supplier gets treated differently

Guys, I have ordered a toy from Hong Kong. It is priced at about HK$749 (=US $96). Today I receive a notice to pay for customs duty / VAT for R 1500??

So Aramex messed up. They submitted the value of the toy being 749 US dollar instead of HK dollar. With the current HKD<->USD exchange rate, Aramex erroreously declared 7.8 times more than the actual value.

This is the first time I use Aramex Global Shopper. I wonder if I should be using them again, if there are alternative shippers that have Hong Kong and Japanese coverage

Did they add a breakdown of duty and vat on the Aramex Global Shopper webpage? Look for the SAD500 Customs declaration.

Certain toys are liable for 20% duty, such as Tricycles, scooters, pedal cars and similar wheeled toys. If this is what you are bringing in, then it is price of goods + 20% duty and then 14% VAT on the whole amount.

If any other toy, it should be zero rated. Unfortunately fighting the SARS customs people is near impossible.

On the SAD500 declaration, the R1500 Aramex quoted is for VAT only.

The declared rand value for the toy is about R9000 but it should have been HKD 749 x 1.58 = ZAR 1183.42

1 HKD = ZAR 1.58

So actual value R 1183.42
Declared value R 9000

The cost of good on the Aramex page is
Cost of goods:
108.9487179487 USD

Seems that Aramex's customs department is a bit of a mess at the moment.

I had an issue with my order where the thing was incorrectly classified, and then they made it my problem to sort out with documents etc....
