Aramex global shopper

From what I understand for parcels with a combined value of R500 you don't get charged vat or duties?

What nonsense, along with their other issues, they have huge clearance problems.
Its all document and pc based, there is no such thing as held in customs, all parcels sit in the couriers own cage at the airport and most customs delays are because of courier problems and not customs.
Aramex definitely have a customs clearance problem - they are short staffed, they forget to submit documents, sometimes whole shipments at a time, they submit incorrect documents and so on. They have a very small cage and handle quite a bit of parcels, I have been there when shipments arrive at the airport, I didn't think they move those volumes.
They get a huge bag from an airline and on more than one occasion they have forgotten to submit an entire bag.
Custom clearance can be done in a matter of minutes if done correctly and efficiently. Both postbox-courier and DHL usually have your parcels pre cleared while on route, only Aramex have delays and its only their fault, just easy for them to blame customs because everyone goes oh ok, its all customs fault.
Either way they are the best alternative to SAPO but for valuables and important shipments I give them a huge miss.

My shipment has been precleared, sent Monday morning from New York, in Jhb customs currently.

Should get delivery in Durban tomorrow, latest Friday.

Which immediately puts pay to the "Its all document and pc based" notion...

As for these huge sacks we've been told about, I'd like to see livedd666 go through all the parcels, inspect the invoices, determine the codes and calculate the duties in "a couple of minutes"

And yet dhl, fedex with 10x the volume manage just fine. you have clearance staff, its their job, its computerized, its fairly simple actually. Is there any special reason you defending aramex incompetence?

As i said, aramex are short staffed, add to that the errors they do, and clearance takes anywhere from a couple of days to a few weeks.

No reason, it's just not incompetence... And you're full of it.

A couple of days is not unreasonable, in fact it's faster than FedEx managed.

Not going to argue with someone who has no idea how the industry works. If you happy with their inefficiency cool, hey, many people still ship with SAPO.

I still ship junky stuff with aramex, still better than SAPO, but they are a joke to work with.
 
I'm one of those that still use SAPO ;)

I don't actually mind the slowness as long as it arrives safely. But Aramex seems to really have a lot of issues to sort out.

Aramex sometimes have to open parcels before they get cleared to be loaded on a flight manifest, ie checking for suspected loose li-ion batteries or other prohibited items, that will be at the source Aramex dept in Nyc/Germany etc, they will use Aramex tape to reseal the box.

Boxes opened by Sars customs inspectors in Sa will be sealed with Sars tape to indicate they opened the parcel.
 
After having spoken to a Cop, who works at Customs, this is the process:

All items offloaded off the plane passes through a cargo scanner. If they pick up an anomaly, it is forwarded to customs for inspection.
If its fine, it heads off to the couriers cages, where it is processed for customs clearance.

After clearance is done, and duties/vat paid for then it will be couriered.

TL:DR: Aramex is slow, shifts the blame to customs.
 
So after having arrived at the NY Aramex facility on the 11th at 11am (NY time) today the 14th at 13:00 (NY time) they have finally acknowledged the receipt and sent me a message. I can understand that they might be very busy, but thats pretty slow. No photo either.

However, it seems like the sender didn't include the 2nd line of the address which includes my account number and the parcel is on hold. Somehow they did manage to email me... so they must know the parcel is for me and they should easily be able to look it up? And the website seems to need Firefox to work properly. I hope I've now submitted the correct information to them. Not sure how long before it comes 'out of hold'. So far I'm not impressed. I might have it by the end of July.
 
Must be because I'm using Opera, but that uses the same engine as Chrome, so it should work. Certain parts like viewing shipment details don't work.

Anyway, the parcel is now on it's way to JHB. The tome zone difference between us and NY probably plays a factor as well. So maybe another week or so before I get it. At least it's making progress.
