I ordered an item from Amazon and had it in my hands in 5 days.

I ordered an item via aramex. It took 5 days to get to SA,. The package transited multiple countries. I loaded all the documents to the website before the item got to SA.

More than two weeks has elapsed since the arrival in SA , but still no movement with customs.

Is this an ARAMEX or SA customs problem?

Customs. The strike has caused longer delays than usual.

You cannot compare Aramex Global Shopper to Amazon. Amazon use DHL Express or Aramex Express. Aramex Global Shopper is a 2nd tier service. By this I mean that it is not Express. If the airplane is full of Express items, the AGS parcel will have to wait for the next plane. If customs are busy with Express items your AGS parcel will just have to wait. It is a case of you get what you pay for. You want fast? Pay for Express, and with Amazon you do exactly that.
We get the cheap and sometimes nasty, but it's still better than the post office, even EMS.

Any reason they don't offer a faster option for AGS? Would be nice to have that option.

My package arrived in Dubai yesterday am and left again this am so some movement atleast.

I mailed jhb yesterday as my amazon package was not showing movement and low and behold last night it was paid and shipped, so good "om biekie hulle gatte warm te maak" it seems...

Another question - The google return kit box has now been shipped and automatically paid for, so the mail and ref # to AGS in JHB didn't sem to help. I have another kit sitting in NY I'd like to cancell. Is there a direct email I can use to try and sort it out? I've seen one for an Olivia of that's still applicable.

My latest AGS package just arrived today. For small Aliexpress orders I'll definitely recommend sending from China to Aramex in Hong Kong by SF Express. If they don't offer it by default, send the seller a message to request SF Express.

If you import a battery they will confiscate it.
However, most of us here have successfully imported phones, and I have 2 x JBL charge 3's in Johannesburg at the moment.
I did notice that the shipment got placed in a BIO container (probably because of the built-in power bank), but it got here.

Ok so a physical battery like rechargeable aa's or a phone/camera battery would be a no go?

But items with batteries in them seem to be ok then?

Have you compared prices on Amazon, including their shipping fees? Aramex is normally the shipper but Amazon has charged less than the standard R199 for the single, lighter items I've bought.

If I chose a phone on Amazon of similar value the import fees come to R1700 in total.

Aramex website lists a 7% duty and 15% vat on mobile phones. I paid over 29%. Hmm, something is not adding up here.

Is there a formula for this? How do they calculate imported goods? And how can an imported item of the same nature and value attract less import fees with for example amazon?

I received the customs release form and it shows the code for a phone that is carried in hand or the person that attracts 9% Duty. Those numbers still don't add up for me though.

I'll stick to amazon from now on. If the item is not available via Amazon, I'll give it a skip.

Amazon probably havent adjusted yet the duties to 9%, 7% is the old rate. When they eventually wake and see they are being charged the 9% they will adjust accordingly.

The numbers add up fine, sort of, you also get charged vat on the 9% duties...sneaky huh.

Then vat, looks like aramex used the slightly higher value which I assume is the amount with shipping, so vat they calculated on 10712x10% so 11783.20, 16% vat is 1885.31 you were charged 1907.55

Like I said, give or take a few rands, maybe some exchange rate fluctuations or whatever, but the amounts are what you would sort of expect them to be.

And I am no fan of Aramex so if the figures were out I would point it out for you.

If I look at a phone on Amazon that is valued similar they seem to charge a lot less duties etc. Weird.
