Ok thanks - any idea if I win a bid on ebay that ships to SA and do checkout if the shipping exclude customs or includes it like on amazon?

This happens to me quite often.
I feel the R160 is a big scam as l only import boards and backlights for televisions, and you can see what they look like from an x-ray.
However, once an invoice has been sent, and the corresponding bank statement sent, all is well.

Why can't you get a bank statement? If that sounds suspicious to me, it sounds 10 times worse to a customs agent.

i paid with the balance on my paypal not with my card through paypal

Ok so another question about shipping from ebay to AGS. I see some people in past mentioned ebay detecting AGS as a P.O. box (when entering your client code on the second address line) and not being able to ship. Is this still an issue?

PayPal is still a bank. Ask for a statement via the PayPal webpage and submit it along with the invoice they emailed you when you originally purchased the item.

When you add the New York address to eBay it immediately suggests an alternative that is near as damn the same thing. Go with it.
Put your code on the same line as your name.

Thanks some of the items I want ship to SA and some only to UK. Either way, seems its gonna be cheaper to use AGS even for the ones that ship to SA. I changed the first address line 'Aramex House Old Bath Road Colnbrook' by omitting 'Colnbrook' and ebay seems to have accepted it

edit: ok moved my code as part of my name and moved 'Colnbrook' to 2nd address line and seems it works

Who you use to ship to SA is personal preference in m opinion.

As for the secondhand thing with permit, shouldn't be an issue if you take the regular route of taking a photo of your ebay order and upload to AGS. If however you create your own invoice, do not mark the item as secondhand, that is when you will need the permit. If you just mark it as whatever item it is, then it will be fine but you will pay the import tax as if it is a new item.

Ok so I decided to buy a phone outright (not a bidding item) and while having it in my cart got an offer for gbp10 cheaper than the list price, however when I click on the button to accept his offer I get "The importation of used or refurbished goods may be subject to import permit requirements. Please check applicable regulations for specific import restrictions in your country."
And it does not take me to checkout.

Any ideas?

If you're on a UK auction, your default address must be UK as most people only ship locally and set up their accounts for local sales.
Same goes for USA auctions. Most people only accept bids from the lower 49 states, so set your default address to NY.
You will probably still see that warning, but will be able to purchase your phone.
Be aware of the duty I think its 9%, but could be wrong.
Add price plus duty, then add 15% VAT on that.
In other words, just add on 25% to price you paid before you receive your phone.

From investigations in the past, I think you'll actually need a permit from ITAC to import certain second hand items.

I have tried everything. This particular phone is specified as shipping to SA (actually most countries). I have tried setting my default address to the AGS one it does not make a difference. Even tried doing it with a uk vpn - nothing.
Reason I might have preferred shipping via ebay to SA is because they have a coupon P20APP which gives you 20% off the total price when checking out.

But really much of a muchness cause if a do a 'test' checkout with ebay on the item they quote me gbp17 shipping and gbp17 customs with is roughly R630.
Going AGS route the weight cost would be around R200 and the customs I estimated to be R200 as well if I go by what amazon charges on their checkout page for a similar model and priced phone. So bottom line is that coupon would only make the end result R100 cheaper

Sadly you are probably right. I have emailed ebay and posted on their community to ask more info. I have also tried checking out with a similar phone (Whcih does ship to SA) on amazon and they quote the usual shipping and import duties. No mention of 'import permits' - the phone I chose is "refurbished" so obviously also second hand

DHL seem quite certain, and I bet they researched the hell out of it first.
As it is, the phone you're buying would have to state "2nd hand phone" for customs to really take note.

What do you mean by taking a photo of my ebay order - do you suggest I do a screenshot of my order? This is going to be my first time using AGS.

I have emailed ebay and posted on their community to ask more info.

So they replied via email and told me I can't ship using ebay's international shipping due to needing a permit. They referred me to this page which does not make sense to me but seems my only option will be to forward to my AGS address as they will handle the import process - hopefully without issue as I had only imported 2 items this year so far.

I take it that you are not an importer/exporter?
Do you have a SARS code? If not, then applying to ITAC is out of the question as they require this code.
If the eBay seller is using Pitney Bowes to courier it to you, order your phone, settle back and wait for it to arrive. I don't think you ordering 2 items a year so far is in any way a threat to SARS so you should be good.

Nope not an importer/exporter - just your average joe trying to get a bargain ;)

I won a bid on an iphone and paid via paypal. So no turning back now. This item only ships (from uk) to uk address so put my AGS London address. For you and other that has done this many times how should I handle this to ensure the least amount of hassles?

I assume the next step will be a notification from AGS via email when they receive the item. Or should I keep checking the website? Then - as far as invoices go I assume I will have to upload one to the AGS site. Do I just take a screenshot of the paypal transaction emailed to me (although it shows Apple iPhone SE - 16GB - Space Grey (Vodafone) A1723 (CDMA + GSM) ) on the invoice - is the 'vodafone' maybe a giveaway that it is second hand and should I rather make my own invoice?

Thanks for your assistance guys.

Screenshot of the ebay order is usually all you need to upload to AGS, they then create an invoice on your behalf and it is usually smooth sailing. I only b other with paypal screenshot and bank statements _if_ they ask for it.
