Looking this up, there should be no duty as they should clear it under HTS code 8517.00.
However, there is always vat to pay, and that is levied on clearance fee and invoice amount.

What we need is for someone who has actually imported a phone to weigh in and give advice.

I have imported plenty. Electronics in general are not subject to customs other than vat and surcharges.

So a NVR will only be VAT (but thats 15% in any case) clearance fee. What surcharges?

I have my card details on the app, but I do my own payments. I won't allow anyone to have control of my card. I see a mistake they have to correct it before I pay a cent.

Yes. Surcharges like the additional 10% on top, I'm rusty but I think SARS refers to it as ad valorem excise duty.

Think.of it this way, customs duty is a way to protect local manufacturing, which is why clothing, motor etc have massive duties. Electronics in general have no customs, but there are still vat and duties.

If you ever buy a car radio from overseas, make sure it's classified as consumer radio electronics and not motor vehicle electronics....

It's called the auto pay service. It's still better than the wife's spending habits so I guess it's all relative.

If I suspect an incorrectly weighed item, must I pay for the shipping in the meantime or wait for it to get to jhb first and ask them to check it?

If I pay, would they refund?

Pay one amount at the end of customs. You don't have to pay each amount as it pops up (my preference). That way you can still argue any values if need be and have them adjust things.
 
I want to import a gpu from USA and its working out about R3800 cheaper so far. Besides shipping and vat, any other charges for pc components?

Ask them to re weigh before paying. If you pay and there is a mistake the refund will take a while to process.

My issue is I want to buy the Steel Series Arctis 1 wireless headset which is around R 99$ or cheaper. This estimated import fees is R +- R 300 and the shipping is the around R 600 from Amazon. I want to use AGS and buy from a US store as I have a Standard Bank Shyft cards with dollars on it which can't be transferred to rand without paying a massive fee if that makes sense.

Sometimes it's not worth the shlep for a small saving.

When you use Aramex Global Shopper, they import on your behalf.
The onus is on them to ensure that any invoice in parcel matches your uploaded invoice. If it isn't correct they will receive the R2000 fine levied by SARS Customs.
If you import directly the onus is on you. You have to absolutely insist that the seller sends an exact copy of the invoice he will include inside the parcel. Then, when DHL ask you for the invoice it matches.
If you don't ask for invoice (and there is a discrepancy) you are royally screwed. It is virtually impossible to appeal a SARS fine, and it's usually 2 grand.
The Chinese are famous for sending an invoice for less than you paid, figuring it will help you out to claim the shipment was less than it actually was. If you don't watch it, their helpfulness will cost you a klomp money.
Long story concluded - after paying 2 x R2000 fines to customs (thanks DHL for not having my back), I use Aramex Global Shopper for all shipments. I know for a fact that Aramex were caught out once from email traffic that also cc'd me. Not my problem as I always upload the correct invoice. In fact, I always insist the seller not include any invoice in parcel.

I'm still waiting for my parcel to get to AGS Hong Kong I asked seller not to included invoice, I don't know if did or not. In the meantime let me ask for a copy of the invoiceIMG_20200730_122339.jpg
