There is really annoying, especially when ordering small items, from an informal seller.

Our customs are still living in the 1920s. Everyone knows most orders are from small marketplace sellers, and that those often only provide receipts or order confirmations. They want the word INVOICE to appear on the peace of paper which is stupid. I suppose you could provide the PayPal payment receipt as proof, as POP was once a requirement from our distrustful SARS.

Many years ago I had a guy from Germany send me something, customs insisted to see the credit card statement where the amount was paid for the item. When I eventually got it to them, they said they see the value but don't understand the language. This after I explained to them for weeks on end, I did not pay for it, it was a gift from someone in Germany.
 
Years ago, a friend in Canada sent me some second hand computer bits. They where stuck in Customs for 6 months, as they could not determine a value for them.

So after a few back and forth phones calls, they eventually released my "bits" , but not before I swore the poor Kapies mother, and told him to stop being a total retard, and seeing as they had no value, he could chuck them in his dust bin.

You were lucky. Officially you need a SARS permit to import ANYTHING SECOND HAND into SA. If he wanted to be a real d1ck he'd have insisted on one and then charged customs warehouse fees per day.

Until some customs guy or courier agent asks you for the actual permit or charges you warehouse storage fees because suddently they're a little more diligent than the rest.

Yeah. I basically just put my order confirmation into a more “formal” format. Used the correct details, invoice number, values etc

That's because some people at the courier or customs don't follow the spirit but the letter of the law. The law is inappropriate for the 21st century given international mail order or online shopping. These laws are meant to deal with large businesses which import lots of items for resale and are not geared to people who do basic online internet shopping. You should be able to provide the order confirmation page or screen shot and that should be enough. In fact customs should not be assessing items below $500. That stuff should just go through tax free as it does in the US. More expensive items should have the invoice or order confirmation included and processed automatically. Customs should only look for contraband and large consignments which flout regulations and fees. That they're checking up on tiny purchases is an indication of a problem in the SA society.

I would think adding the word INVOICE on top would be the only edit one would need to do. It is after all an invoice. I am not a lawyer though and I've never had a courier or SARS not accept an order confirmation.

Aramex themselves handle the tariff codes.
