Aramex global shopper

Finally, my parcel popped up on the Aramexglobal system. Got a notification today.

From Latvia? First time heard of someone buying from there. How much did it cost to get it to Germany?

It's a Sony USB cable for a tablet. Difficult to find a genuine cable, but there is a supplier in Latvia..
Free shipping from Latvia to Germany, and I have paid my R175 to get it here. Problem is - It's now sitting in JHB instead of CPT.
It says, Status: Held in Customs - Awaiting Customer Instructions
Problem is - no one has asked me a thing, resulting me firing off an email to customer service asking what the heck? :wtf:

This guy was helpful with my parcel as well, forward that mail to him directly - [email protected]

Couldn't you find a supplier in China/Hong Kong?
The prices in Europe adds another 20-24% VAT from where they import it.
So you paid more than R400 for the cable otherwise it wouldn't be held up at customs.
Now you pay another R175 for delivery and another R150-R200 in customs.
You can buy dual-boot tablets for $70 from China including their USB cable.

You now have to upload the invoice and pay the customs fee if there wasn't an invoice attached.
Awaiting customer instructions - This happens when customs doesn't report back to Aramex, then you have to email them.

It is a very particular cable called a SONY USB cable SGPUC2 (for Sony Xperia Tablet SGPT12 SGPT121/T122/T123).
I got it on Ebay for R385. The cheapest on Aliexpress is $41.84 (R669) with a month and a ½ airmail shipping.

Really wanna try these guys out but with the exchange rate being shot, even small items end up costing a fortune even before shipping costs.

Aramex is the cheapest package forwarder I know. I have used them 3 times no problems at all. I just wish they had parcel consolidation

I just checked right now and these are both still working :
BLOGAGS5 to register for a lifetime account for only $5
AGSUSD10 to register for a lifetime account for only $10
Obviously the BLOGAGS5 is the one to use

Once you have lifetime membership I wonder if you can change your home country, say if you move the future?
If you can and it is truly a global lifetime membership where ever you may be then its really quite an amazing offering.

And to really top it off if they start offering consolidation, though I can understand the logistics of why they wouldn't want to or be able to offer that as a courier company.

Edit. Looks like in Africa they only support South Africa, Botswana and Kenya.

If I get this right if the item is below R500 and is duty free you don't get charged anything more than the Aramex shipping?
Above R500 then a R50 clearance fee is charged and a disembursement fee of 2.5% only charged if the import duties exceed R1000?

Seems too good to be true!

No, it's actually R400, which is $23 if the Rand doesn't fall anymore.
There was mention of R500 but SARS became a lot more strict over the past months and stops all parcels over $23.
Otherwise SARS classifies it as a 'high' value item.
Then you pay 14% x 110% of the value of the item in VAT charges &
10% of 110% of the value for duty charges(if it's an electronic item) &
R50 for Aramex customs clearance.

There are no duties on electronics, only vat?

By default is anything under R400 exempt from vat and duties?

From the SARS webpage:
"Excise duties and levies are imposed mostly on high-volume daily consumable products (e.g. petroleum and alcohol and tobacco products) as well as certain non-essential or luxury items (e.g. electronic equipment and cosmetics)."

Xbmcfan told you this two posts up.

Anything under R400 is known as a "low value item" and should not incur any VAT and duties. On the other hand, it is still a "luxury item" and it all depends on the SARS official.

From my not insignificant experience ordering on ebay/Amazon, no duties on electronics/computer parts/camera equip, only Vat.

So now that I have my shiny new Aramex Global Shopper account, what sites do you guys recommend for getting pc components?
Amazon, ebay & Newegg seem obvious. Any other recommendations?

Newegg seems awesome have gazed longingly at some of their deals in the past.

Not that I've used it yet - but it is there for when I want to :)
